Politics, U.S.: A civil rights double-play, and a good day for progressives

  • arizona’s immigration law When Arizona enacted a draconian immigration law last April, civil rights groups filed suit against it. This prompted Jan Brewer, the governor, to challenged the lawsuit in court. Today, a federal judge struck down her challenge, allowing the lawsuit to proceed.
  • don’t ask, don’t tell In 2004, the pro-gay GOP group Log Cabin Republicans filed a lawsuit against the Justice Department, arguing that DADT was unconstitutional. The (federal) judge agreed, and today issued an injunction against the policy, halting its enforcement. source

Politics: Meg Whitman’s entire campaign eaten by the immigration monster

  • bad Meg Whitman’s political image has become centered on a single issue: What she did to her former undocumented housekeeper.
  • worseCalifornia’s gubernatorial debate last night became about the issue of immigration, which pretty much sucks for her. source

Politics: Colbert’s House subcommittee hearing statements “not insulting”

  • It’s not quite clear which way it’s going to come out, but it’s not going to be the same bombastic style you see on TV because there’s a certain decorum, and he’s aware of it. It will be funny, but not insulting.
  • An aide familiar with Stephen Colbert’s testimony • Describing what he’s expected to say in a House subcommittee hearing about immigration. Colbert will be appearing with United Farm Workers President Arturo Rodriguez, whose “Take Our Jobs” campaign encourages people to do the same work as migrant farmers. Only a handful of people have tried so far, one of them being Colbert. source

Politics: The worst opening statement in debate history

  • What happened? Appointed Governor Jan Brewer (R-AZ), most famous for this controversial bill, wasn’t asked a difficult question at the start of yesterday’s debate. In fact, she wasn’t asked a question at all; she was simply given an open opportunity to introduce herself to voters. This is the easiest part of a debate, and yet somehow, Brewer found a way to bungle it (and badly). This may be the most unforced error in the history of political debates. source

U.S.: WHOO: Illegal immigration dips by nearly 67 percent

  • 850,000 number of people who illegally entered the U.S. between 2000 and 2005 (which is huge)
  • 300,000 number of people who did the same thing between 2007 and 2009; this is a pretty big deal source

Politics: J.D. Hayworth no match for comeback king John McCain

  • hypothesis J.D. Hayworth, sensing weakness in John McCain’s abilities after he ran for president, thought Arizona could use a new senator.
  • reality Despite Hayworth’s stronger conservative credentials, McCain spent a lot of money and came out on top tonight. source
  • » Oh yeah … McCain has an election in November, but this will likely be a formality. See, McCain lives in Arizona, a state that leans far enough to the right that it allowed a crazy immigration law to take effect. There’s no way the’re electing a Democrat to the Senate.
  • » Other races: The other key state, Florida, was half-boom, half-bust for big-spending outsiders. While Democratic senate candidate Kendrick Meek easily won his race over Jeff Greene (a guy who’s a billionaire and made a lot of money off the housing market bust), multi-millionaire Rick Scott toppled Attorney General Bill McCollum in the GOP gubernatorial primart.

U.S.: That Iowa egg company behind the salmonella outbreak is bad news

  • 380 million tainted eggs is a huge problem for Wright County Egg. But by no means is it the first huge problem the firm has faced. In fact, the DeCoster family, which owns Wright County Egg as part of their larger farming conglomerate, has had a number of legal problems in recent years, including these gems on their permanent record:
  • $2.1Mthe amount founder Austin Jackson DeCoster paid in penalties for immigration violations in 2003
  • $1.5M the amount the company was nicked for sexual harassment allegations (including rape!) by the EEOC back in 2002
  • yes the company has also had to pay fines for animal cruelty at another egg operation in Maine – just this year source

Politics: Did Obama have anything to say about that immigration bill?

  • NO he signed it into law without any public comments source
  • » Though in his defense … Obama may not have allowed reporters when he signed the bill into law, but he did make a statement after the Senate passed it in a one-person-strong voice vote yesterday. “The resources made available through this legislation will build upon our successful efforts to protect communities along the Southwest border and across the country,” he wrote.
