Tech: Sony’s PlayStation Network troubles aren’t over yet

  • PSN hacked again…kind of. PlayStation Network was down again today, but not for the familiar reason of widespread hacks. A newly discovered exploit allows people to change account passwords armed with nothing but an email address associated with the account and the owner’s date of birth — both of which hackers obtained in the larger exploit earlier this month. Gaming Nyleveia.com discovered the newest flaw and contacted Sony about the problem. The network then went down again, apparently so Sony could fix it before it got out of hand. It’s important to know that the network wasn’t actually hacked again — hackers stole no new information, but instead discovered a new exploit that’s now being fixed. Sony is going to have a rough time recovering from all of this. source

Tech: Sony in hotter water as stolen debits begin to surface

  • swipe The reports are beginning to flow in about fraudulent charges being racked up; two users have claimed fraudulent debits of a few hundred dollars (that they’re using debit card numbers to draw directly from accounts is significant). source

Tech: Article about “Goatse Security” doesn’t use phrase “Goatse Security”

  • where can we drop this for max lols
  • Reported AT&T iPad data hacker (and member of “Goatse Security”) Daniel Spitler • Reportedly discussing, in unsealed chat logs, their plans to release information on iPad 3G users, which AT&T had made available one-at-a-time on a public Web site, but they gathered en masse using a brute-force attack. A secret source reportedly turned in the chat logs focused on Spitler and his partner, Andrew Auernheimer, who were charged with fraud and conspiracy to access a computer without authorization. The details of the case were released today. We’re just upset that this Computerworld story doesn’t once use the phrase “Goatse Security.”  source

Politics: Despite large-scale attack, Gawker stays on the 4chan beat

  • Here’s what we like about Gawker: Despite getting their asses handed to them by a group that reportedly had indirect ties to 4chan (and made note in their attack of the site’s criticism of 4chan), they don’t back down. A feature headline on Gawker’s front page? “4chan Is Not Very Scary In Real Life.” Mend those fences, Gawker Media, mend those fences. source

World: North Korea hacked to the tune of “Super Mario World.” Heh.

  • So, when North Korea’s YouTube and Twitter accounts got hacked yesterday, this crude-looking cartoon got posted. The toon, which features background music from one of our favorite video games of all time (Super Mario World, what what?) shows Kim Jong-un violently slamming his convertible into starving North Korean children, and the heir apparent talking to his dad on an iPhone – while driving. The clip is crude and violent, so keep that in mind, but still interesting. source

U.S.: Ohio State’s servers hacked; officials wait two months to tell people

  • 760,000 people’s private data at risk source
  • » Why did they wait? Well, the school wanted to double-check that this is what happened, so they used a private security firm to check what happened. Fortunately for affected users, while Ohio State says that they don’t think anyone’s data was actually taken (and the breach was more to see if the server was ripe to launch cyberattacks from), they’ve offered a year of free credit protection to those who were affected by the breach. Still, two months? That’s a long time to wait to inform people about something of this nature.

Tech: Major sites force password changes after Gawker’s security lapse

  • action A bunch of hacker thugs who we’d turn in if we knew who they were leaked over a million Gawker usernames and passwords online. We hate those guys.
  • reaction Other sites, such as Twitter, LinkedIn and Yahoo, have asked large swaths of users to change their passwords, which is pretty smart, guys. source

Tech: Great. Gawker’s leak may have led to large-scale Twitter attack

  • bad Gawker’s data – tons of it, from images to user passwords to database files to worse – was uploaded by a couple of axe-grinding bad eggs on Bittorrent last night. Great. Thanks, jerks!
  • worse It appears that someone may have taken the passwords from the torrent and used them to turn Twitter accounts into Acai Berry-pitching spambots. CHANGE YOUR PASSWORDS, STAT. source

Biz: Protip: Avoid sketchy-looking ATMs; skimmers want to rob you

  • Their skillz are getting even crazier, too. ATMs are great inventions, but thieves are getting even more adept. They’ve been using skimmers, which fit inside of an ATM and can read your card, for a while, but now they’ve moved to using plastic overlays that neatly fit over the number pad and TEXT your info to the scammer’s cell phone. Scared yet? source
