This is the sticking point many other people and groups have, just an FYI. Sure, it’s good for them to talk to the FCC about this kind of thing, but they’re basically trying to set public policy for everyone with a bunch of backroom deals. Sounds shady to us. Many feel that there’s a hidden agenda at work here, and if they do use this self-appointed authority, it could be dangerous. source

Tech: Did the New York Times totally fail on Google/Verizon article?

  • @NYTimes is wrong. We’ve not had any convos with VZN about paying for carriage of our traffic. We remain committed to an open internet.
  • A tweet from Google’s public policy feed • Denying the New York Times’ claims that they plan to play turncoat on net neutrality with Verizon. We must say, it’s not often the NYT gets a story totally wrong, and, well, this is kind of a biggie to get wrong. To top it all off, Verizon is also denying the claims. Embarrassing. (For what it’s worth, the Times article is still up with no correction in sight.) source

Tech: Is Google throwing net neutrality under the bus for Verizon?

  • What the #(&!, Google? We thought you were above listening to big telecom’s advances to shape internet bandwidth. So, why have you been secretly talking to Verizon for nearly ten months about basically ending net neutrality? You’re a big enough company that you could’ve totally prevented this from happening. So why give in? What benefit is there to either you or your millions of users? Unbelievable. We thought you were cut from a much tougher cloth. Screw “Don’t be evil,” guys. It’s dead. Google killed it in one fell swoop. (Oh yeah, there’s this other report which basically contradicts The Times. And this one. We hope these are right. But we’re still keeping the unchecked rage above because we’ve never been so angry at Google before and it’s a new feeling to us.) source

Tech: Is Google doing a good job of courting government contracts?

  • yes … Google has a new Google Apps for Government, designed to bring the cloud to groups once the jurisdiction of Microsoft Word and the like.
  • … but Google had a chance to prove itself with the city of Los Angeles, only to miss a June 30 deadline for a contract over security concerns. source

Tech: The RIAA: The Viacom/YouTube decision is “bad public policy”

  • So says the group that sues suburban mothers for stealing two dozen songs. President Cary Sherman says that the ruling “will actually discourage service providers from taking steps to minimize the illegal exchange of copyrighted works on their sites.” To that, we say, make it easier to exchange content legally and you won’t have an issue. Fewer lawsuits (actually, wait, no lawsuits), more cool things like Lala and Rdio. source

Tech, World: Who blinked first in the Google vs. China search stand-off?

  • Google did, but not too much. The search giant angered China by re-directing to its free-speech-allowing Hong Kong site, threatening to revoke its business license. So, to prevent that, Google will force Chinese users to click on an image before going to the Hong Kong site, which is annoying but likely gets around China’s problems. Will it work? Good question. China is finicky. source

Google’s happy after a judge sided with them in the long-running $1 billion lawsuit. Viacom plans to appeal. We appeal to them to put “The Daily Show” on YouTube again. source

Tech: A Google music store? Apple’s Lala purchase may haunt them

  • first Google launched a music search feature with a number of providers, including Lala and (the now-closed) iMeem.
  • second Apple bought Lala partly because of this competition, and Google now uses iLike, Rhapsody and Pandora.
  • third Losing their key service, Google said screw it and is now building its own music service. It’s all-out war now. source
