U.S.: Ted Stevens in plane crash? Friends fear he was aboard the plane

  • They’re not out there alone right now. There’s people that are providing support. From what I’m told, there are survivors on this aircraft. I don’t know how many could be fatalities at this point.
  • Alaska Air National Guard Maj. Guy Hayes • Regarding the crash, which many fear could’ve included Ted Stevens. While it’s claimed that some people survived the crash, it’s too early to know who. Stevens, the longest-serving GOP senator in history, lost in the 2008 election amid myriad ethics charges. The charges were dropped months later in the wake of prosecutorial misconduct. source

U.S.: In Louisiana, half a dozen teens drown in underwater sinkhole

  • Unfortunately, I’m afraid, and it’s with a heavy heart, to report that we have pulled so far (six) bodies from the river. … I can honestly say that in my 26 years of service I’ve never seen anything of this magnitude. And I hope I never see it again.
  • Shreveport, La. Fire Chief Brian Crawford • Describing the sinkhole that killed six people last night. (A seventh was rescued.) The 18-foot hole sucked in the teenagers, who largely didn’t know how to swim and had otherwise been in the shallow water. A friend of the families, Marilyn Robinson witnessed the deaths: “None of us could swim. They were yelling ‘help me, help me. Somebody please help me.’ It was nothing I could do but watch them drown one by one.” Harrowing. source

World: Love Parade tragedy: Angela Merkel promises “intensive” investigation

  • The organisers have said themselves that they will not hold any more Love Parades but such large events need to be made safe and the federal states of course have the required police forces to do this.
  • German Chancellor Angela Merkel • Regarding this weekend’s tragic Love Parade incident, which she says her government needs to get to the bottom of to figure out what happened. “It now needs to be very intensively investigated as to how this happened because the many young people who were delighted to be going to the event have had… terrible memories and we have to do everything to make sure that something like this does not happen again,” she said. source

Music, World: Love Parade tragedy: Here’s a scary video clip from the scene

  • Harrowing stuff. Imagine being stuck in a situation like this – a huge festival basically brought to its knees by a stampede which killed and injured many. There are likely many confused people inside. Best wishes to everyone involved. source
