World: Since Israel won’t allow it, Egypt opens up its Gaza Strip border

  • It’s a tiny strip that’s only been open for small periods since 2007. While Egypt still has beef with Hamas, they opened that strip so Gaza could get humanitarian aid into the enclave, which is otherwise completely surrounded by Israel (or Israel-blocked water). Hard materials – like steel and concrete to rebuild from the 2009 bombings by Israel – wouldn’t be allowed through Egypt, however. Still a big step, though. source

Politics: Haaretz: This Gaza flotilla incident is Israel’s Vietnam. Ouch

  • Here in Israel, we have still yet to learn the lesson: We are no longer defending Israel. We are now defending the siege. The siege itself is becoming Israel’s Vietnam.
  • Haaretz columnist Bradley Burston • Regarding what this whole mess with Hamas and the humanitarian ship shows. Simply put, Israel is blundering its way into a massive mess. As Burston puts it, “In going to war in Gaza in late 2008, Israeli military and political leaders hoped to teach Hamas a lesson. They succeeded. Hamas learned that the best way to fight Israel is to let Israel do what it has begun to do naturally: bluster, blunder, stonewall, and fume.” Ouch. He also criticizes the country’s toxic political situation that makes things like this happen. This is an Israeli newspaper trashing Israel’s policies unforgivably. That says a lot. source

World: Israel kills a bunch of pro-Palestinian activists, pisses off Turkey

  • A very harrowing clip to watch. Israel just stepped in it, big time. For the last three years, Israel has been enforcing a blockade on the Hamas-led Gaza Strip. When a series of ships from Turkey full of activists and supplies tried to get past the blockade, the situation got incredibly violent, with at least ten deaths. Now Israel has completely pissed off their only Muslim ally in the Middle East, along with much of the rest of the world. source

World: German president Horst Köhler resigns, we get to use “ö” in a story

  • A country of our size, with its focus on exports and thus reliance on foreign trade, must be aware that military deployments are necessary in an emergency to protect our interests, for example, when it comes to trade routes, for example, when it comes to preventing regional instabilities that could negatively influence our trade, jobs and incomes.
  • German president Horst Köhler • In the statement that led to the downfall of his presidency. The quote suggested that Germany was in Afghanistan for economic reasons, which might’ve been a little too true for some. Now Köhler is out, which isn’t as big a deal as it sounds. Chancellor Angela Merkel wears the pantsuit in this relationship and the German president is merely a ceremonial position. source

Politics: Oh boy: Rand Paul wants to punish illegal immigrants’ children

  • DUDE. Do you not remember what happened last week? Despite, well, the 14th Amendment, Paul thinks that denying citizenship to children of illegal immigrants is a good thing. “We shouldn’t provide an easy route to citizenship,” he said. “We’re the only country that I know that allows people to come in illegally, have a baby, and then that baby becomes a citizen. And I think that should stop.” It’s an amendment man, AN AMENDMENT. He’s already said things offensive towards blacks and latinos. Who’s next? source

World: Madagascar’s shaky government directly affecting the environment

  • cause In March 2009, 16-year-old (not really) Andry Rajoelina took over the island’s shaky, weakened government in a coup.
  • reaction Since then, the country’s huge, diverse rainforests have been cut down en masse for sake of huge profits. source
  • » Cha-ching!: The government has been reportedly turning a blind eye to the massive damage to the country’s rainforest because they’re reportedly taking in some of the ill-gotten profits. How much money are we talking? $167 million or more. For a nation like Madagascar, that’s huge.
