Politics: Bachmann warns of “the rise of the Soviet Union”

  • What people recognize is that there’s a fear that the United States is in an unstoppable decline. They see the rise of China, the rise of India, the rise of the Soviet Union and our loss militarily going forward.
  • Michele Bachmann • In a radio interview. Anyone fearing the rise of the Soviet Union can rest easy, as the country hasn’t existed since its collapse twenty years ago. Bachmann has previously claimed that America’s founding fathers “worked tirelessly” to end slavery, and that the Revolutionary War started in New Hampshire. Are we unfairly picking on a popular candidate for making a few innocent gaffes? Or is Bachmann’s tenuous grasp on history a legitimate concern for a candidate seeking the presidency? source

Music: Sigh: Our least-favorite pop star ever prevented fresh World War

  • 1999 A British calvary officer in Kosovo defied orders to have troops seize an airfield overtaken by Russian troops, which could have reignited the Cold War – or worse.
  • 2004 The American general who ordered the strike, Gen. Wesley Clark, ran for president as a Democrat, and lost. Nobody ever heard from that guy ever again.
  • 2005 The British soldier in question released a song with these lyrics: “You’re beautiful, you’re beautiful, you’re beautiful, it’s true.” Yes, that guy. James freaking Blunt. source

Politics: Rand Paul somehow argues that the poor have it good

  • First, it started with the Cold War. Then it went to this argument that the U.S. has the engine of capitalism. Then he noted that the Soviets were thrown off because Americans had color TVs. Then he made this whopper of an argument: “The poor in our country are enormously better off than the rest of the world. Doesn’t mean we can’t do better, but we have to acknowledge and be proud of our system of capitalism, be proud of our American way.” Uhhhhh … source

Tech, U.S.: We ended the cold war, hoo-ray! Wait, where’s our space fuel?

  • one Because of the Cold War, the U.S. had a massive nuclear weapon supply, and as a result a huge supply of Plutonium. Oh, and a crazy space race.
  • two Now, thanks to the Cold War ending a while ago, we stopped saving plutonium and now we don’t have enough fuel for deep space exploration. Crap.
  • three To make up for the demand, needed for trips past Jupiter, the Department of Energy said that they would start making Plutonium 438 again. Woot. source
