Chrysler’s already scattered their archives. Much of the history of GM and Chrysler is well-embedded into American history. Which is why it’s a damn shame that one of Chrysler’s pre-bankruptcy owners, Cerberus, decided to close off the engineering library at the Chrysler Technical Center. They later gave large chunks of it away to whomever. The Truth About Cars’ Bob Elton makes an impassioned plea for auto companies to remember their history – the good and bad – and keep that information safe and available to the public. Especially in the wake of the fact that, you know, the American public owns huge chunks of it now. source
Are we excited about it? Absolutely! We think it is a great opportunity for people to get rid of their clunkers.
Cliff Johnson • President of Texas Motors Ford, on the cash-for-clunkers program the Obama administration implemented this year. The plan, which gives consumers up to $4,500 in credit to swap aging vehicles for newer, more fuel-efficient vehicles, has fans all over the map: Consumers, environmentalists, automakers and guys that sell cars for a living. Only the latter category talks like Cliff Johnson, though. • source
General Motors decides to make a car in Michigan again. You know the story: State hosts corporation, state becomes dependent on corporation, corporation decides to offsource most of its work, state goes into economic seizure, corporation goes bankrupt. Sounds sweet, doesn’t it? Well, Michigan – 14.5% unemployment and all – plans to go back to its mistress and let them make cars in Michigan again. The Spark, unlike most of GM’s recent hogs, is small and compact – and it’s gonna be made in Michigan. Maybe this could be the start of a brand new relationship where GM screws them over again. source
They’re not going away completely, but they are cutting back. One of the most obvious public exponents of General Motors may be its role in the hugely popular NASCAR. GM, largely represented by Chevy, will take a step back, cutting funds from some big stars’ teams (Dale Jr. and Kevin Harvick) and overall doing less. NASCAR’s already been hit hard by the global crisis, with many job losses in the last year. This is just another chink in the Armor-All. source
