Biz: The Boston Globe starts up its own Web site — wait, didn’t they have one?

  • We’ve never had The Boston Globe have its own front door in the digital space. It’s always been integrated with Boston.com. This was an opportunity to build something brand-new and to have it front and center and really do justice to the brand promise The Boston Globe offers to its readers.
  • Boston Globe publisher Christopher M. Mayer • On the paper’s launch of its own Web site this morning — a paywall-laden one that smartly separates the company’s newspaper content from Boston.com content that might work better on the Web. Boston.com is paywall-free and still serves breaking news, blogs and the whole bit. Bostonglobe.com focuses on the newspaper itself. It’s an interesting separation and we’re curious to see how it works out for them. The Boston Globe’s parent, the New York Times Company, famously started up a successful paywall experiment for the mothership paper. (Quote from a paywall-laden article, but there’s free registration for the next couple weeks; the source article links to the free Boston.com piece.) source

Politics: Rachel Maddow isn’t running for the Massachusetts Senate, hosers

  • Scott Brown said Rachel Maddow was running for Senate. Brown said this in an e-mail designed to raise funds for his next Senate campaign. However, as this Boston Globe full-page ad notes, she’s in fact not running for Senate. Julius may be, though, if his residency checks out. He’s on the Lyndon Larouche ticket. source

Biz, Politics: Explaining himself: Why a Boston Globe reporter voted no to cuts

  • They didn’t want more work from us, they didn’t want less holidays, they didn’t want fewer vacations, anything we could have offered besides just our money, they were uninterested. And I feel like they were insensitive to a lot of people who have already sacrificed quite a bit for them.
  • Reporter Scott Allen • A member of the Boston Newspaper Guild who voted no on a 8% pay cut, and since the measure failed, guaranteed himself a 23% pay cut. He claims that The New York Times Co. stacked the cards against employees who hadn’t gotten a raise in four years due to wage freezes. Of course, in the wake of all of this, the paper could close. Scary. • source

Biz: Boston Globe workers: Say no to a pay cut, get a much bigger one

  • -8.4% Amount the New York Times Company wanted to cut their pay, per agreement by the union’s guild.
  • -23% Amount the company plans to cut their pay after they turned down the agreement. That’s super-lame. source

Biz: Deals were made, hands were shaken, The Boston Globe lives for now

  • Six of the paper’s seven unions agreed to cuts. The largest didn’t. The Globe, which looked off a cliff last night at the bottom and didn’t like the view, has apparently succeeded in getting enough concessions to stay afloat for the moment. The paper had set a May 1st deadline to get their unions to agree to $20 million in cuts. The only union that didn’t agree was the largest, the Boston Newspaper Guild. At issue are salary cuts and benefits such as lifetime job guarantees, which seem not so smart now that the paper’s bleeding money. source
