U.S.: Retired NYC fire marshal: I wanna kill Obama, then myself

  • It had been a good solid fifteen months or so. We were due for another one of these. Seems that Michael Bowden, a 77-year-old retired police officer and fire marshal who worked in NYC, had discussed a plan to kill Obama – and then himself – because he was not doing enough to help out African-Americans. (Bowden is white, by the way.) Police checked his Spartanburg, South Carolina home and found a ton of loaded semiautomatic weapons next to his bed, suggesting that he was well along with his plan. Obama has faced a handful of assassination plots like these, but generally it’s not because Obama is doing too little to help black people. So this is new. source

World: Was Mahmoud Ahmadinejad an assassination target today?

Despite claims that it was actually a grenade that exploded here, the Iranian government is standing firm that it was just fireworks. No Ahmadinejads were harmed. source

World: In Indonesia, a plot to kill Obama during a state visit was foiled

  • They had some very ambitious plans. Inspired by the Mumbai attacks a couple years ago, a group of Indonesian militants planned to trigger a number of attacks on Jakarta on August 17th, when Obama was planning to come to town for a state visit, in an attempted coup. The group, reportedly a splinter group of the al-Qaeda-tied Jemaah Islamiah group, was busted back in February during a raid. Wow. source

World: Georgian TV station has never heard of “War of the Worlds”

  • Want to panic your country? Simple. Simulate war conditions on a news broadcast and say that the president has been killed. And just watch the ratings roll in! This actually happened in Georgia, when they claimed under the guise of a “simulation” that the Russian army was invading and the president had been killed. Great public service, guys. Part two is here, by the way. source

World: Seen any of these people? They’re wanted for getting Bourne in Dubai

  • Top center: Was James Cameron prepping for a “True Lies” sequel after Ahnold gets out of office? Will Tom Arnold make an appearance?
  • Top right: Generic reporter for The Guardian. Who knows what he writes? It’s something.
  • Bottom left: Man, Ann Coulter has really let herself go.
  • Bottom 2nd-from-left: If that watermark were a tattoo, it’d be the coolest facial tattoo ever.
  • Bottom 3rd-from-right: Things must’ve gotten tough after you left “ER,” eh man?
  • Bottom right: He looks vaguely like Andrew Sullivan, which means he’s left a massive online paper trail. All of these people are suspects in the assassination of Hamas official Mahmoud al-Mabhouh, BTW. All of them have awful passport photos. source

World: The E.U. hoppin’ mad about fake passports used in Hamas killing

  • They plan to issue a sternly-written letter shortly. Mahmoud al-Mabhouh’s assassination in Dubai last month has increasingly gotten more intriguing as the story has unfolded, and the use of fake IDs by the reported assassins, besides being a plot point for a Jason Bourne movie, has only boosted attention on the case. While their statement won’t expressly cite Israel for what happened, we’re guessing the EU wants to infer it. source

U.S.: “Cape Man,” the crazy guy who wanted to kill Obama, arrested

  • Daniel James Murray was arrested … at a casino. First of all, if you’re so worried about the safety of the American economy that you threatened to kill the president, why are you at a casino? But anyway, the man, who bizarrely deposited $85,000 at a Utah bank and then withdrew it a week later while making crazy comments all the while, has been detained by the Secret Service. By the way, the New York Daily News reports that Murray likes wearing capes and talking to himself. source
