Sports: Did ESPN’s firing of Steve Phillips expose a double-standard?

  • Steve Phillips is no longer working for ESPN. His ability to be an effective representative for ESPN has been significantly and irreparably damaged, and it became evident it was time to part ways.
  • The ESPN network, in a statement • On the firing of “Sunday Night Baseball” analyst Steve Phillips, after he had an affair with a 22-year-old production assistant. ESPN admitted in the quote that it wasn’t the analyst’s conduct that got him fired, but the fact that he made the network look bad. Our take: We, as a culture, were largely sympathetic to David Letterman, even though he basically did the same thing. Why shouldn’t we do the same for Steve Phillips? However, we will say this much – Letterman got to control the story, while ESPN and Phillips largely didn’t. • source

Sports: Why we loooooove Charles Barkley, reason No. 353,759

  • While Charles often makes jokes about his producer during our telecasts, he used poor judgment on Saturday during our NBA coverage. His comment was inappropriate and TNT apologizes to our viewers. We have spoken with Charles privately about it and will not have any further comment.
  • TNT • In a statement about their NBA coverage and its greatest asset, Charles Barkley, who, despite the DUI and the golf swing, is pretty much the coolest former NBA star ever. He called his producer a five-letter word that starts with a “p” on air, and he gets a slap on the wrist. That rules. • source

Politics, U.S.: The New York Times won a Pulitzer for a blacklisted story

  • The outright refusal of any of these ‘news organizations’ even to mention what Barstow uncovered about the Pentagon’s propaganda program and the way it infected their coverage is one of the most illuminating events revealing how they operate.
  • Glenn Greenwald • Discussing the media’s ignoring of a major investigative journalism piece by NYT reporter David Barstow on the television media’s use of talking heads to disseminate propaganda in favor of the military on cable news networks. • source

Biz, U.S.: Rick Santelli speaks (loudly) for the true fiscal conservatives

  • We’re thinking of having a Chicago Tea Party in July. All you capitalists that wanna show up to Lake Michigan, I’m organizing. We’re gonna be dumping in some derivative securities, what do you think about that?
  • Rick Santelli • CNBC analyst, on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange yesterday. He was railing against the idea of Obama’s $75 billion foreclosure plan, designed to help people from losing their homes. We have to admit that we may not necessarily agree with what he’s saying, we sure love the way he said it. It’s fun to hear him rant. • source
