U.S.: Ted Stevens – remember him? His trial’s likely getting dismissed

  • The backstory In case you’ve forgotten, Stevens, the former Alaska senator, was convicted of corruption charges right around election day for apparently taking gifts from Veco, an oil services company. The case managed to do what years of questionable actions by Stevens couldn’t – get him booted out of office by voters after 40 years. source

  • Fumbling the case This morning, the Justice Department, citing gross prosecutor misconduct, will be looking to dismiss the conviction, effectively putting Sen. Stevens in the clear. The prosecutors apparently withheld significant evidence and mishandled witnesses. The case would likely not be pursued again, mainly because Stevens, 85, is really freaking old. source

Offbeat, U.S.: Alaska and Florida consider a ban we don’t want to talk about

  • Uh, let’s just say they’re lookin’ out for Fido. It seems obvious it should have been on the books already, but the top-left-cornered state and the bottom-right-cornered state don’t have beastiality laws on the books. That could change soon, though – the main argument in favor of the ban is that those who molest animals are more likely to rape or molest people. So, there you have it. Beastiality bans. (*Whew* we actually got through that!) source

  • Sarah Palin isn’t fading into the background, so neither are we. Given her known political aspirations, the American public deserves to know what she’s doing in Alaska, and about her extreme anti-conservation policies.
  • Rodger Schlickeisen • Defenders Action Fund President, regarding her support of a predator-control program in Alaska that allows for aerial hunting, which involves – we’re not making this up – shooting wolves from helicopters. Defenders recently launched a site attacking and giving updates on the former Veep candidate and current Alaska governor. Palin says their campaign “perverts” the issue. • source
