World: Deutsche Bank CEO targeted in mail-bombing incident

  • The return address was listed as a European central bank, which would likely increase the chances of him opening it.
  • New York Deputy Police Commissioner Paul Browne • Discussing the package received by Josef Ackermann, the CEO of Germany’s Deutsche Bank, which contained a fully-functioning bomb. The bomb didn’t detonate and was intercepted before it reached the CEO. Officials are saying that mail rooms at financial institutions should tighter up their security after the incident. source

World: ICYMI: Australian police strip Occupy protester down to underwear

  • Was this necessary? Via Tumblr user eggznrice, who told us, “Please get on this as soon as you can! Craziness!” The Occupy Melbourne protester in this video, a young woman named Sarah, was wrapped in a “tent dress” when police chose to pull it off of her, using knives to cut it off. (The protesters were told that Tents were considered structures that would be removed, hence the interesting clothing choice.) Three other protesters complied with police in Monday’s incident; Sarah did not. In the end, she was wearing nothing but her underwear. The Victoria police’s Ethical Standards Department says it’s investigating an assault incident, and Occupy Melbourne is trying to encourage other Occupy movements to wear tents in solidarity. source

Biz: MF Global: Jon Corzine doesn’t know where your money is, investors

  • Well, that’s reassuring: In statements published online to be spoken aloud at a House committee hearing, the former MF Global CEO plans to say he has no idea where he put investors’ money. “I simply do not know where the money is, or why the accounts have not been reconciled to date,” he plans to say. He claims that, since his resignation, he hasn’t had access to the information that would allow him to understand or reconstruct events. No word if angry farmers with pitchforks (some of whom might be among the investors in MF Global) will be among the crowd at this morning’s hearing. (AP file photo) source

World: Hillary Clinton, Vladimir Putin have war of words over Russian elections

  • She set the tone for some actors in our country and gave them a signal. They heard the signal, and with the support of the U.S. State Department, began active work.
  • Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin • Claiming that U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton instigated violent protests in his country by claiming there was evidence of electoral fraud. “The first thing that the secretary of state did was say that they were not honest and not fair,” Putin claimed, “but she had not even yet received the material from the observers.” Clinton responded to Putin’s comments by reiterating her own. source

Politics: Guess we’ve gotta remark on this new Rick Perry ad

  • Rick Perry, jockeying for the anti-gay vote: This ad, called “Strong,” has the Texas governor promising to end the Obama administration’s “war on religion” and touting his commitment to Christianity. “Something’s wrong in this country when gays can serve openly in the military,” Perry says, “but our kids can’t openly celebrate Christmas, or pray in school.” It’s unclear what policies President Obama has put in place to deny kids the right to openly celebrate Christmas. As of this writing, the video has 675 likes and 26,650 dislikes. source

Politics: Gingrich and Pelosi, reachin’ across the aisle

  • 418 bills co-sponsored by Nancy Pelosi and Newt Gingrich source
  • » Bipartisan support: For twelve years, Pelosi and Gingrich served together in the House of Representatives, and supported a total of 418 bills together. That’s an average of 34.83 pieces of legislation per year that enjoyed Pelosi/Gingrich support (at least, that’s what our team of math experts tells us; we didn’t have time to check their work). One such bill was the Global Warming Prevention act of 1989, the memory of which probably won’t do Gingrich any favors in the Republican primary (relatedly, neither will this). It should be noted, however, that much of this was non-contentious legislation, such as one honoring the 50th anniversary of the National Heart, Lung and Blood instituted.

Politics: Rep. Peter King not sold on Gingrich candidacy

  • You know there is enough crises in the world, without inflicting crisis on ourselves. Or again, I keep saying ‘putting himself at the center’. The reason the Republicans lost the government shut down debate with President Clinton in 1995, is because Newt gave the impression it was all about being made to get off of Air Force One. I meant, that’s how he puts himself at the center of everything.
  • Rep. Peter King • Expressing his doubts about the prospect of a Newt Gingrich nomination or presidency. King is an extremely conservative member of congress, and served under the Gingrich speakership in the 1990s. It’s comments like these that give voters and analysts reason to pause when considering the Newt 2012 effort, as various figures within the GOP establishment do seem to have serious doubts about Gingrich’s suitability to the Presidency, and his legacy in Republican politics. Gingrich is well aware of this, too; when the House in 1998 voted to reprimand him over ethics charges, 196 Republican congressman voted against him. source

U.S.: Jerry Sandusky arrested on two more child sexual abuse charges

  • The charges keep coming: Former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky was arrested today (he was first arrested on November 5th) on the strength of two new accusations of child sexual abuse against him. The charges were the result of the two accusers presenting testimony to a grand jury; both of them were members of Sandusky’s charity program for at-risk youths, The Second Mile. As this case has worn on, especially following two rather disastrous media interviews by Sandusky (with the bizarre approval of his defense attorney, Joe Amendola), it seems like the total number of his alleged victims may continue to increase at an illuminating, grim, and chilling rate. source
