  • » Not to belabor the point: The extension of the Bush-era tax cuts, which the President hashed out with Republicans, was a compromise granted to a political party that claims to be concerned about the deficit. You might therefore think the deal wouldn’t staggeringly increase the deficit, but you’d think wrong. This news will invariably be spun into another story about reckless liberal spending, but remember: this was the war trophy the Republican Party got out of the President, unfunded expenditure be damned.

  • » Three justices are fine, thanks: Reports from Washington suggest that the Supreme Court may be three members down during President Obama’s address tonight. Though a court spokeswoman would not verify which justices would be attending, it’s expected that Samuel Alito, Antonin Scalia, and Clarence Thomas will skip the address. This seems particularly relevant to Alito, who irritatedly mouthed “not true” during last year’s address, after the President’s criticism of the court’s “Citizen’s United” ruling.

U.S.: Rahm stays alive as Illinois Supreme Court grants a stay

  • one year The amount of time that Rahm Emanuel had to live in Chicago to qualify for the mayoral ballot, which Monday an Appellate Court ruled he’d failed to do.
  • one day The amount of time that it took for the Illinois Supreme Court to grant Emanuel’s request for a stay, ordering that his name be put back on the ballot. source
  • » Rahm isn’t out of the woods just yet: Illinois’ highest court issued the stay in light of the Emanuel campaign’s pending appeal, but they haven’t yet decided whether to hear his case. If they do, his lawyers will have to convince seven justices to overturn the Appellate ruling. That said, as the Board of Election Commissioners are about to begin printing the ballots for early voting (which starts Monday), this is a critical success for Emanuel’s mayoral ambitions.
