Tech: What happens when a student resume goes viral? Well, this.

  • We apparently need to try harder: This guy‘s resume got posted on the Huffington Post and went viral. It was even worthy of a follow-up. Which is a cool way to get attention for your job prospects. That said, though, we think that an approach like this is only useful if it has a corresponding traditional element. Conversely, though, gimmicks are how you stand out. A lot of people have noted that it’s been done, but who cares? It caught people’s attention and encourages people to look who otherwise wouldn’t have. (Though, a criticism – that box on the bottom with the circles is totally subjective and as a result doesn’t really say anything that can be quantified.) source

Tech: Apple’s new MacBook Pro makes us long for an upgrade

  • Admit it. They’re MacBook Pros. Of course you want to have sex with these machines. That said – the changes in the new MBP lineup appear to be under the hood rather than cosmetic in nature, with a way faster processor and graphics card, a much nicer camera, and something called ThunderBolt, a potential USB replacement that Apple says is 12 times faster than Firewire and 20 times faster than the ubiquitous port technology. It makes our current unibody Mac seem like a piece of crap we picked up from the scrap heap two years ago. source

Tech: New Facebook app tells you when your friends break up

  • Sure, it’s a little creepy, but I imagine that it will be hugely popular.
  • Tech Blogger Martin Bryant • On the new “Facebook Breakup Notifier” app, which does exactly what its name implies. Some are worried that the application will encourage Facebook stalking (as if the mere existence of Facebook doesn’t encourage Facebook stalking), but Bryan validly points out that “if you’re worried about being stalked, maybe you should be more careful about who you approve as a Facebook friend?” source

  • -2% the decline in Blogger’s U.S. usage; it’s still growing globally, though

  • » Old people blog, young people tweet: It’s becoming clear that, while blogging is definitely here to stay, it’s not exactly the hip new thing for kids to do anymore. Why’s that? Well … basically, all their friends are already on other social networks, meaning that their friends don’t have to come to them. Facebook is the new blog site du jour. But even considering that, sites like WordPress say they aren’t facing much decline because, well, serious bloggers blog on WordPress and they use social networking to promote their content.

Tech: Google wants to improve search results by asking your friends

  • Question of the day: Do your friends make your search results better? A couple of days ago, when we were worried about Glenn Beck, Google announced an update to their social search that makes it easier to integrate your friend’s social streams from multiple networks into Google’s search results. If your friends suck and offer terrible advice, you need new friends. Which is also why you shouldn’t use this. But even if their advice is sound, does this cross a privacy line? source

  • » When clever names go bad: As we have noted in the past, Bit.ly’s name is tied very closely to Libya. However, as the Interwebs have gone down of late in the country, many are wondering if this means anything bad for the URL shortener market, which also counts owl.ly and ht.ly as potential victims, among others. We’ll let Bit.ly’s CEO, John Borthwick, take it from here: “For .ly domains to be unresolvable the five .ly root servers that are authoritative *all* have to be offline, or responding with empty responses. Of the five root nameservers for the .ly TLD: two are based in Oregon, one is in the Netherlands and two are in Libya.” And plus, they have backup plans in place, like j.mp or bitly.com. So no, nothing to worry about.
