Politics: Herman Cain decries “character assassination” against him

  • You may not want to admit this, but this is a character assassination on me. Why? Because I was doing so well. There is no other reason to basically explain it.
  • Herman Cain • Denying, to Fox News’ Neil Cavuto, that he carried on a thirteen-year affair with a woman named Ginger White. This is a familiar rhetorical stance by Cain, when compared to his handling of sexual harassment claims against him — he has been very vocal in declaring his nearly blanket innocence, at one point suggesting an accuser, Sharon Bialek, had been brought forward by “the Democrat machine.” On that occasion he admitted that he had no factual basis to make such a claim, and he’s at least again being candid, saying that he believes somebody was “putting up” White to her claims, but that “we don’t know, we have no idea who that is.” source

Politics: “Conservatives4Palin” just can’t let go of their Palin dream

  • Not taking the hint: Regardless of your opinion of Sarah Palin, that she inspires her core supporters cannot be denied (Mitt Romney wishes he were so lucky). After announcing she wouldn’t run for president, following months of touring about on a campaign-style bus and giving fiery speeches in early primary states, one might expect a mass exodus of support. Having left her job as governor of Alaska, then subsequently pocketing millions in donations that people no doubt expected to fuel a presidential run, even an ardent fan would have reason to balk. Not “Conservatives4Palin,” though; they bought time for this ad urging Palin to run, spending more of their passion and money in service of a person who seems to care only about the latter. source

Politics: Who are the winners if Herman Cain quits?

  • With the latest scandalous allegation that’s been lobbed at Herman Cain (that he carried on a thirteen-year affair with a woman named Ginger White), and suggestions from the Cain camp that discussions are occurring as to how to proceed, the folks at The Atlantic ask a very good question: if Cain drops out of this thing, who stands to benefit? We agree with their analysis — the obvious and most consequential conclusion is “not Mitt.” A Cain withdrawal would be the first dropout by a well-polling candidate, and those voters will almost assuredly continue seeking a non-Mitt alternative. Politics: Speedy Herman Cain denies affair allegations before they’re even public

  • In case you missed it earlier: Here’s Herman Cain denying allegations (to Blitz) that he had a 13-year-long affair — in a rare instance for a scandal of its nature, ahead of the story’s full release. They’re happening so often now that Cain can deny them preemptively. That said, this is a pretty impressive get for a local news station, in this case Fox 5 Atlanta. As for the allegations, Ginger White claims she announced the affair to the public so she could get ahead of the story herself. “It was pretty simple,” White told the station. “It wasn’t complicated. I was aware that he was married. And I was also aware I was involved in a very inappropriate situation, relationship.” source

Politics: Newt Gingrich’s favorite new word is “aggressive”

  • 6 times Gingrich uses the word “aggressive” in this YN interview source
  • » But what should we be aggressive about? Here’s the tally. Twice, Gingrich was describing how we should approach the war on drugs (“We ought to be much more aggressive about drug policy”); once, he was describing how the US went about supporting non-communist trade unions in Poland in the 1980s (“…we when we aggressively supported Solidarity”); and on three occasions, Newt was talking about US-Cuban relations (“I think we need a very aggressive model”). Oddly, he didn’t once utter the words “fundamental” or “profound,” although he did use another Gingrich fallback, “logical,” on two occasions, and busted out “totally” once.

Politics: Bachmann rips The Roots over “Fallon” song choice

  • This is clearly a form of bias on the part of the Hollywood entertainment elite. This wouldn’t be tolerated if this was Michelle Obama. It shouldn’t be tolerated if it’s a conservative woman either.
  • Michele Bachmann • Expressing rage after finding out that the music that played ahead of her recent appearance on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” was an instrumental take on the 1985 Fishbone song “Lyin’ @$$ B*@!&” — a song choice by The Roots, who haven’t hidden their political views and aren’t beyond inspired song choices when performing as Fallon’s house band. And you don’t get much more “inspired” than implicitly calling a presidential candidate a something-or-other via a clever song choice. Jimmy Fallon apologized to Bachmann via Twitter; Bachmann hopes The Roots get disciplined over the incident. We like The Roots, but we agree with Bachmann here; if The Roots wanted to get a quick rip in on Bachmann, there are plenty of other songs out there which don’t add a misogynistic element to the whole thing. We recommend “Lies” by The Knickerbockers.  source

Politics: ShortFormBlog + DC Decoder = GOP debate fun!

  • It’s that time again, folks! Tonight we’ll be providing coverage of the GOP presidential debate along with DC Decoder — we’ll also be participating in a livechat of the momentous evening — a CNN joint based in DC and moderated by Wolf “colossal dork” Blitzer — to boot. The stakes are rather high this evening; Newt Gingrich storms into tonight’s debate as the polling frontrunner, despite recent revelations of his high-paid work for Freddie Mac. As these revelations haven’t yet registered in any painful way for Newt, a strong debate performance tonight could vault him even higher in the esteem of the anti-Mitt contingent. Which is not to say he’s the only candidate with a lot on the line; tonight’s debate is on foreign policy, a topic on which Herman Cain has recently floundered (and how). It’s impossible to say what exactly will happen tonight, but we bet it will be damn compelling viewing.
