Music: Indie rock invades the Billboard 200 charts in a big way

  • Forget that Taylor Swift’s at No. 1 again. The real story is Andrew Bird (with Noble Beast) at No. 12. And Animal Collective (with Merriweather Post Pavilion) at No. 13. And Bon Iver (with the Blood Bank EP) at No. 16. All three are career bests. And all three albums are pretty well-reviewed, too. Some music blog jerk somewhere is thinking that this is a sign of the commercialization of indie. We want to tell that guy to shut up and just enjoy the moment for what it is, OK? source

Biz, Music: The Smashing Pumpkins’ newest song gets a Super Bowl ride

  • The combination of Hyundai’s exciting new Genesis Coupe matched with music performed by Smashing Pumpkins offers the perfect ‘kick-off’ to Super Bowl advertising.
  • Joel Ewanick • Hyundai Motor America’s vice president for marketing, who we imagine was gritting his teeth when he said this phrase regarding the placement of the Smashing Pumpkins’ “FOL” in one of their Super Bowl commercials. Yo-Yo Ma also gets the placement treatment from Hyundai; Yo-Yo Ma may actually be cooler than Billy Corgan at this point. • source

Culture, Music: HOLY CRAP! THE “ONCE” COUPLE BROKE UP!

  • It was a very necessary part of our friendship but I think we both concluded that that wasn’t what we really wanted to do. So we’re not together now. We’re just really good friends.
  • Glen Hansard • Lead singer of The Frames, who recently broke up with his on-screen/off-screen musical partner in the Oscar-winning 2007 movie “Once,” Marketa Irglova. That, my friends, is the biggest news story of the year. But wasn’t it a really great ride while it lasted? • source

Music: If you seek Britney Spears’ “Amy,” look elsewhere

  • It sounds like something else! (OOH …) If you say the title to Britney Spears’ “If You Seek Amy” really fast, it sounds less like a directive about a friend and more like a come-hither request featuring a word you can’t play on the radio. Of course Spears would make it her new single! Few radio stations are playing it, despite its popularity, until her label comes out with an edited version that gets rid of the “k” on “seek.” (Some are even taking it into their own hands.) Just think, if removing the “k” could solve all of our moral problems … source

Music: The new U2 single = Spoon + Of Montreal + Bloc Party

  • How it’s like Spoon First thought when listening to “Get On Your Boots”: Well-placed handclaps, anyone? Yeah, that’s totally Spoon’s territory, as is the random fleeting sound. And the verse totally sounds like Spoon’s “Finer Feelings.” Yeah. Spoon is totally the biggest influence on rock music right now. source

  • How it’s like Of Montreal That whole paisley chorus/bridge-going-paisley thing is such a staple of Of Montreal, and they did that whole twelve-songs-at-once thing on last year’s Skeletal Lamping, which was easily 2008’s strangest indie-rock album. U2 wants a piece of that uber-hip Elephant 6 pie. source

  • How it’s like Bloc Party Bloc Party is the most U2-like band of the naughts, so it’s inevitable that it sounds like a driving Bloc Party song to some degree. But this doesn’t sound like U2. No, this sounds like U2 playing Bloc Party playing U2. Which is weird. Bono, be yourself again! Get your edge back, Edge! source
