Culture: Thanks to Jodie Foster, we have Mel Gibson’s beaver shot

  • Mel Gibson’s latest role has been a tad delayed. Why, you ask? Well, he did a lot of pretty stupid things, and now he’s paying the price for them in the press. And so this film, directed by Jodie Foster from a fairly-well-regarded script, may not see the light of day for a while. But that somehow makes the poster for it funnier. Remember the days that Mel knew what women wanted? Yeah. Neither do we. (Thanks The Daily Whatsource

Culture: Pee-Wee Herman: A bit older, but still a child at heart

Is there anyone more deserving of a comeback than Pee-Wee Herman/Paul Reubens? With his upcoming Broadway show, we pretty much have to say no. source

Culture: Dear anonymous sources: Please don’t anger Sarah Palin

  • This is the torrent of rage that builds up when you piss sarah Palin off: “I suppose I could play their immature, unprofessional, waste-of-time game, too, by claiming these reporters and politicos are homophobe, child molesting, tax evading, anti-dentite, puppy-kicking, chain smoking porn producers…really, they are… I’ve seen it myself…but I’ll only give you the information off-the-record, on deep, deep background; attribute these ‘facts’ to an ‘anonymous source’ and I’ll give you more.” Yikes. We’re scared. *cower* source

Culture: “My Girl’s a Republican”: Working class GOP values, set to a beat

My Girl’s a Republican from jeff on Vimeo.

  • It’s the day before the election, and what better way to celebrate than a really catchy hip-hop song about Republican girlfriends? Oh, and you should vote. (via Foster Kamersource

Culture: Ron Howard: The “electric cars are gay” line stays in “The Dilemma”

  • It is a slight moment in ‘The Dilemma’ meant to demonstrate an aspect of our lead character’s personality, and we never expected it to represent our intentions or the point of view of the movie or those of us who made it.
  • Director Ron Howard • Explaining why the gay joke made in “The Dilemma” stays in, despite the uproar against gay jokes in general at the moment. Howard feels the joke is important to understanding Vince Vaughn’s character, and that his film is getting lots of negative attention at the moment because of the timing of it, in which Anderson Cooper seems to be taking on gay bullying as a personal crusade of his. (Cooper called out the movie’s trailer for the use of the phrase.) While it’s controversial, we kind of agree with Howard. Comedy is a slippery slope and not one that should be so strongly affected by PC concerns. source

Culture: Awesome: Zach Galifianakis turns pot panel into pot party

  • Someone has to start to break the taboo against marijuana, and it might as well be Zach Galifianakis. Strange, we would’ve assumed Lawrence O’Donnell would’ve done it.

Culture: The Daily Show’s three most popular episodes Obama-related

  • 3.58M the number of people who watched Obama (the candidate) on The Daily Show back in 2008
  • 2.92M the number of people who watched his wife Michelle on the show a few weeks later
  • 2.84M the number of people who watched Obama (the president) on the show last night source
  • » And we must point out, kids: Jon Stewart did a hilarious intro before he introduced Obama last night. But the conversation went on so long that it never aired. Fortunately, Comedy Central was able to introduce us to the joy that is “Keeping the President Waiting.”

Culture: Marie Claire forced into mea culpa over anti-obesity blog post

  • So anyway, yes, I think I’d be grossed out if I had to watch two characters with rolls and rolls of fat kissing each other … because I’d be grossed out if I had to watch them doing anything.
  • Marie Claire writer Maura Kelly • Basically calling fat people ugly and claiming that they’re at fault for their conditions. Kelly, who was responding to a CNN article about Hollywood’s treatment of plus-size characters in TV shows, went on to claim that “obesity is something that most people have a ton of control over” and offered advice to people to lose weight. The result? Well, she’s pretty much the most hated woman on the Internet today, was forced to respond to the article to apologize profusely, and should probably never write anything ever again. Listen, Maura, Julius may have a few extra pounds on his torso, but he’s not going to take your abuse! Say one more word and he’s gonna chase you down with a Twinkie or one of those dumbbells he never uses. source

Culture: Dear SNL: Why isn’t Jay Pharoah playing your Obama yet?

  • Great SNL clip, one that pretty much perfectly nails Obama’s get-out-the-vote conundrum. Problem is, it’s kinda, well, sad that Jay Pharoah, who has a very good Obama parody, is still being forced to play bit character while Fred Armisen’s mediocre Obama takes center stage. In this clip, Pharaoh is literally standing behind him. source
