Culture: Ronni Chasen’s murder quickly headed towards circus territory

  • The most indication is that it was targeted. A random killing will not happen like this, five shots in a chest area, and it seems like it wasn’t just a random killing.
  • Beverly Hills Mayor Jimmy Delshad • Expressing a belief that Ronni Chasen’s death was no accident, and that it was a targeted killing. Problem is, the police doesn’t back this description.  Chasen, who was working as the publicist for “Burlesque” the night that she was murdered,  died under bizarre circumstances, yes, but saying things like that gets out the tabloid crazies. “This type of media coverage can only jeopardize the integrity of the investigation,” said the city’s police chief, David Snowden. Come on! Don’t ruin our fun so quickly, David! We wanted to spend weeks working up conspiracy theories! source

Culture: What? People actually want to read Mark Twain’s autobiography

  • 7,500 number of copies the publisher of Mark Twain’s autobiography published for its first run
  • six number of reprintings they’ve had to do since the book came out earlier this month
  • 275k number of copies the book has sold so far, it looks like it’s a major hit, actually source
  • » Why did they underestimate? Well, the book, published exactly 100 years after the legendary author died, is kind of a bear. At 500,000 words, four pounds and $35, it’s not exactly breezy summer reading. And there’s more books coming next year, too.

Culture: Simon Cowell has a secret admirer … and it’s Sarah Palin

In Palin’s new book, ” America by Heart,” she gushes about how Cowell is “almost alone in his willingness to tell hard truths.” We wonder what he’d say about her. source

Culture: Greg Oden pretty much most injured player in NBA history

  • We usually make a point not to post sports here, but we just have to this time. Greg Oden has missed more games than he’s played. The Portland Trail Blazer hasn’t taken the court the entire season so far. He’s played just 82 games since entering the NBA in 2007 as a No. 1 draft pick after a dominant single year at Ohio State. And he has to get surgery on his knee again, and will miss the entire season. Again. Hey, Greg Oden, we don’t know why you have the knees of a 60-year-old, but you need to take better care of them, because you’re clearly doing something wrong. source

Culture: Judith Griggs: Cooks Source killed by mean people on internet

  • The bad news is that this is probably the final straw for Cooks Source. We have never been a great money-maker even with all the good we do for businesses. Having a black mark wont help … and now, our black mark will become our shroud.
  • Cooks Source founder Judith Griggs • Admitting the internet campaign against her publication did it in. Griggs, who became infamous for ripping off a writer’s online article and then justifying it by saying that nothing on the Internet is subject to copyright, had few kind words to say to Monica Gaudio, letting out her full rage over the incident in her latest open letter: “If my apology to Monica seemed shallow it was because I was angry about the harm she has inflicted on others on behalf of her own agenda.” The real lesson here, and one that Griggs didn’t admit in her own self-serving letter: Acting unethically will do you in – in the end. source

Culture: One more footnote from Apple vs. Apple: Mr. Guy Goma

  • One of the greatest gaffes in TV history, Guy Goma, a guy going for an interview in the BBC’s IT department, found himself on-air talking about the Apple Computer-vs.-Apple Corps case, which the Mac makers won in 2006. Goma, who has a very strong French accent, rolled with the punches when pretending to be tech journalist Guy Kewney. Kewney died earlier this year, while there was talk of a Guy Goma movie a while back. Wonder where that guy is.
