Culture: It’s official: We don’t like Kevin Pollak anymore, guys

  • So, as you might’ve heard, these contestants on “Million Dollar Money Drop” actually answered this question correctly, but Fox had it wrong. They lost $800,000 on the question, and their mojo, immediately afterwards. So, what does host Kevin “I was in two of the three ‘Santa Clause’ movies” Pollak have to say about this? “They never had a chance to win that money. Ever. No matter what. They got the last question wrong. None of the clips show the last question.” SIGH. OK, Kevin, we used to like you when you were in the “Grumpy Old Men” movies. We even liked your bit part in “Willow.” But we ain’t backing your meal tickets anymore. You’re officially boycotted. (thanks The Daily What, even though we know we shouldn’t) source

Culture: Disney World spying on guests so they can shorten long lines

Disney doesn’t want you bored in line, so they’re researching how to make sure you’re still having fun using an underground command center. Creepy, but cool. source

Culture: Hugh Hefner somehow getting 23-year-old Playmate to marry him

  • These are the words of a man who’s getting engaged to a woman three-and-a-half times his age. That’s right, our boy Hef is getting hitched to Crystal Harris, a playmate who at 23 years of age should make Hugh Hefner’s 84-year-old bones feel brittle in comparison. How does he do it? We mean that in more ways than one. source

Culture: Legendary R&B songstress Teena Marie dies in her sleep at age 54

  • Teena was a black voice trapped in a white body. I would always tell her that she was one of the greatest vocalists of our time.
  • Radio One founder Cathy Hughes • Explaining the loss of Teena Marie, a white R&B vocalist who crossed the racial divide and managed a lengthy career that was still going strong as of 2010. (For you kids too young to remember her, here’s a sample.) Marie, born Mary Christine Brockert, was known for working with Rick James and even had a top-ten record on the Cash Money Records roster, meaning she had something in common with Lil’ Wayne. Marie, who died in her sleep a month after having a very strong seizure, was planning on returning to work next month. Instead, she’s gone. She was 54. source

Culture: “Spider-Man” play’s negative buzz keeps getting worse somehow

  • I have to weigh in on Spiderman. They should put Julie Taymor in jail for assault! I know what it’s like to fall and get hurt in front of 2,000 people. It’s no fun, but at least it was the one time it happened. I hope whoever was hurt is ok and sues the sh– out of Julie, Bono, Edge and every other a–hole who invested in that steaming pile of actor crippling sh–!
  • “Rent” star Adam Pascal • Expressing anger over the “Spider-Man” Broadway show, which has faced multiple injuries since it started its previews. As of right now, shows are getting cancelled to improve safety, and director Julie Taymor is fighting some pretty nasty PR. “An accident like this is obviously heartbreaking for our entire team and, of course, to me personally,” Taymor said in a statement. The actor injured in the most-recent incident, Christopher Tierney, is reportedly doing better, but the negative hype is definitely hurting the show. (By the way, since you asked, we do think Bono and The Edge should go to jail – but not for this.) source

Culture: SNL’s clever rip on Time’s “Person of the Year” pick really insightful

  • We missed SNL last night, but we have to say that this clip really says a lot about the Time Person of the Year situation. While making Julian Assange look as creepy as possible, SNL gets a lot of jabs in at the oddity of Time picking a boring guy who runs a company that gives away your private data vs. an endlessly fascinating dude who tries to reveal corruption. Well-played, SNL.

Culture: Who did Zuckerberg beat out to become Time’s “Person of the Year”?

Culture: Time’s Person of the Year not Julian Assange, but some Mark guy

  • OK, so many were gunning for Julian Assange to go into this spot, but at the same time, Mark Zuckerberg is the guy who would probably deserve the honor most if Assange wasn’t in the running. Why? This seems like a pretty good argument: “In less than seven years, Zuckerberg wired together a twelfth of humanity into a single network, thereby creating a social entity almost twice as large as the U.S.” Assange hasn’t done that yet. Plus, wasn’t Assange on the cover of Time like a week or two ago? Seems like he’s already got some high media saturation. source
