Culture: Piers Morgan says Charlie Sheen “the Che Guevera of television”

  • I’m super-bitchin’ [and] I don’t believe myself to be an addict.
  • Charlie Sheen • In the key quote in his whole rant with Piers Morgan, which was a big score for him because, well, he was sort of a surprise guest. This certainly is going to be a punch-up for Piers’ ratings, and of course, because the CNN host delves in the soft stuff like his predecessor Larry King did, he used the phrase “the Che Guevera of television” to describe Charlie. We want this on a T-Shirt, stat. source

Culture: Protip to ABC: NEVER LET ALEX JONES ON “THE VIEW,” EVER

  • Who seriously thought this was a good idea? OK, we know, he’s friends with Charlie Sheen. But seriously, if you let this guy talk for 30 seconds, you realize that he shouldn’t be allowed within 12 feet of this show. Still hilarious, though – he’s name-dropping the World Trade Center in his rant about Charlie Sheen for some reason. Blood tests. Urine tests! He name-dropped Infowars.com! The TSA! Police state! Why did they let him on this show? source

Culture: Did Charlie Sheen’s sidelining expose a double-standard?

  • So the message from CBS and Warner Brothers seems clear: abuse yourself and the women around you to your heart’s content, but do not attack the golden goose.
  • New York Times columnist David Carr • Pointing out the elephant in the room with the Charlie Sheen/”Two and a Half Men” situation, which is that Sheen did a number of things arguably worse than any of his current drama – and to women, even – but insulting his boss ended up being the thing that got him fired. It’s a good point, and one that shouldn’t get overlooked as CBS attempts to figure out what happens next.  source

Culture: Razzies: Of course “The Last Airbender” won big. We mean, really.

  • The big Razzie superstar: M. Night Shyamalan kept up with his track record of producing reliable Razzie “winners” and scored five trophies last night, including “Worst Picture,” for his widely-criticized live-action version of “The Last Airbender,” a popular Nickelodeon toon. Beyond the usual crapfest that might follow a film like this, it wins a little extra because the characters are largely Asian but the lead actors chosen to play them were mostly white – a decision made all the stranger because Shyamalan is Asian himself. source

Culture: Kathy Griffin dating the Old Spice Guy? Sure, why the hell not?

  • We’re not sure how we feel about this. First of all, it’s a celebrity item not about Charlie Sheen, so it wins some points for that reason alone, but Kathy Griffin – the A-lister who used her D-list status to prop herself up – is possibly dating Isaiah Mustafa, better known to just about everyone as THE OLD SPICE GUY?!?!?!!? Sure, this could be a stunt (she’s been known to do this), but whenever Griffin watches the original commercial, it might prove to be insanely meta. source

Culture: Charlie Sheen: Oh, I was just calling Chuck Lorre by his “real name”

  • I was referring to Chuck by his real name, because I wanted to address the man and not the @(!&%$(! persona.
  • Charlie Sheen • Explaining why he called his “Two and a Half Men” boss, Chuck Lorre, by his Jewish name, Chaim Levine. Not that this is going to appease Jewish groups. “By invoking television producer Chuck Lorre’s Jewish name in the context of an angry tirade against him,” says Anti-Defamation League national director Abraham H. Foxman, “Charlie Sheen left the impression that another reason for his dislike of Mr. Lorre is his Jewishness.” Hey Charlie, may we offer a word of advice for you? You know why you don’t really see Mel Gibson in many movies these days? It’s because he said things like this. source

Culture: Daft Punk Coke bottles: Because hey, Tron is old news now

  • Because, let’s face it, the one thing that the world needed was Daft Punk’s motif all over a couple of Coke bottles, right? Awesome, yes, but we’re not even sure if Moby would’ve gone for a sellout opportunity this calculatedly commercial. Good work, French guys. source

Culture: You’ll be hearing a lot more of Ted Williams’ dulcet tones

  • It has come to this: Ted Williams, he of the radio voice, will apparently be starring in a reality TV show, a development that seems retrospectively inevitable. Williams now has more employment and opportunity than he possibly could have expected as a homeless man, and that’s a very good thing. We just hope this doesn’t hurt his efforts in overcoming his addictions, which he recently entered and left rehab for, in the face of even more exposure, pressure, and money. Because, cliche though it is, that is what’s most important. source

Culture: The Red Cross is cool, drinks Dogfish Head, into #gettngslizzerd

  • We’ve deleted the rogue tweet but rest assured the Red Cross is sober and we’ve confiscated the keys.
  • A tweet from @redcross • Using a Twitter gaffe as a way to get people’s attention for their cause. The offending tweet went a little like this: “Ryan found two more 4 bottle packs of Dogfish Head’s Midas Touch beer…when we drink we do it right #gettngslizzerd.” Impeccable taste in beer for a humanitarian organization, kids. Anyway, Dogfish Head noticed the tweet and retweeted it, ensuring many others saw it. From there, the Red Cross used the opportunity to correct the problem and in response, got numerous donations and tons of attention. This is how you deal with social media, kids. Culture: Science Channel nets rights to sci-fi cult classic “Firefly”

  • Firefly fans rejoice: The wonderful sci-fi series that lived far too short a life will be airing on the Science Channel, as they’ve acquired the rights for the show’s full run. They will be airing them in intended order (something Fox couldn’t manage), in high definition, and with supplemental scientific commentary from phyisicist Dr. Michio Kaku. Moreover, Nathan Fillion has reiterated that he’d like to play Mal Reynolds again, which may be a pipe dream, but hey! When you’re a fan of a long-canceled TV show, can you get hope for better news than this? source
