Biz: We wish were were important enough bloggers to topple Ben Stein

  • It’s simply unconscionable for a newspaper of record to employ … someone who is surely making a vast amount of money by luring the unsuspecting into overpaying for a financial product they should under no circumstances buy.
  • Reuters financial blogger Felix Salmon • On Ben Stein, who was double-dipping by being a financial columnist for the New York Times AND doing ads for Freescore.com. Salmon, who at the time of the comments claimed to have no influence, had been trashing on Stein’s column since 2007, but said that the commercial pushed it over the edge. But as a result of Salmon’s criticism, Stein WAS fired from the Times for the commercials. Score one for bloggers who think they have no influence. • source

Biz: Did debt collectors play a role in a Florida guy’s heart attack?

  • Get your act together and make the payments on your mortgage. Why don’t you have that helicopter pick you up and bring that payment to the office.
  • A message left for the now-deceased Stanley McLeod • Regarding the helicopter ride he took after a massive heart attack. The helicopter ride saved his life, but messages like this later killed him, a new lawsuit says. “He’d get very red in the face and short of breath,” said his wife, Dianne, of the phone calls. “I believe it contributed to his death, I really do.” Tampa law firm Morgan and Morgan is fighting for the rights of McLeod and other victims of overly aggressive debt collectors, many of which are breaking Florida law. • source

Biz: Question to Citigroup CEO: Is an employee’s $100 million salary too much?

  • You can bet he answered yes. Vikram Pandit of Citigroup admits that they’re probably paying too much to Andrew Hall, that trader who lives in a castle thanks to his massive salary. Wouldn’t it have been funny if Pandit said, “No, we’re not paying too much to a single guy!”? Man, the bailed-out company would be hearing it for months. source
