Politics: Poor Michele Bachmann. Her own campaign staff is abandoning her.

  • The manner in which some in the national team conducted themselves towards Team-NH was rude, unprofessional, dishonest, and at times cruel.
  • A memo from five of Michele Bachmann’s former New Hampshire staffers • Explaining why they quit her campaign last week. The memo went on to say that it was “more concerning was how abrasive, discourteous, and dismissive some within the national team were towards many New Hampshire citizens. These are our neighbors and our friends, and some within the national team treated them more as a nuisance than as potential supporters.” These lapses of communication within Bachmann’s camp seem to show some glaring weaknesses in her campaign strategy.  source

U.S.: Occupy Chicago: Nurses union protests controversial Grant Park arrests

  • cause Early Sunday, police arrested two members of National Nurses United who cared for protesters at Occupy Chicago, in the process ignoring Grant Park’s closing time of 11 pm. They were among 100 people arrested.
  • reaction After getting out of jail on Monday morning, the nurses were joined by more than two dozen fellow union members outside of Mayor Emanuel’s office on the fifth floor of Chicago’s City Hall, causing a bit of an emotional scene. source
  • » Hiding a story from the media? The nurses arrested suggest that police were trying to hide an awkward scene from the cameras. “We were among the last protesters released, for no good reason that we can tell, except for they clearly knew when the media cameras had left,” said Jan Rodolfo, the Midwest director for NNU. “We were tearful and exhausted and shell shocked.” Rodolfo was among those arrested; her court date has been set for November 15.

CNN’s got you covered — they threw together this list of ways to ensure your children are safe — a bunch of stuff that most parents normally tend to do without thinking about it. Do you catch yourself doing any of this?
  • one Moving their kid to a bigger car seat too soon. Not so fast, pediatricians say. Fish gotta swim, kids gotta grow.
  • two Letting their baby sleep in a swing. Though the motion lulls them asleep, they may not get enough oxygen in that position.
  • three Making them watch educational videos. Babies under two years old can’t even understand them at all yet.
  • four Putting the babies on their stomachs when sleeping — a SIDS rick. Just give them “tummy time” during the day instead.
  • five Microwaving their babies’ bottles. The bottles may be made with BPA — or could get too hot to handle. Yikes. source

World: Meteor shower: An excuse for folks with binoculars to look less weird.

  • Keep your eyes on the skies, folks. It’s time for another Orionid meteor shower, guys! “From tomorrow up to 30 meteors an hour could be seen as they burn up, which can be best viewed in the northern hemisphere, with the optimum viewing times likely to be at around 1am or 5am.” This happens every October as the Earth passes through what’s been left by Haley’s Comet. source

Music: The best Scrabble word ever? Coldplay’s Chris Martin on Mylo Xyloto

  • Coldplay’s latest album will be a “love story in a big, dark, scary city.” So, part dream and part nightmare? “So you have a boy and a girl and a group of like-minded people in a sort of George Orwell-type or Kafkaesque world. But it’s hopeful, because it’s about people trying to transcend troubles,” said Chris Martin, regarding Coldplay’s soon-to-be-released album “Mylo Xyloto.” Martin probably hopes it also transcends the pop charts — each of the band’s four albums have sold more than 2 million copies in the U.S., though that number’s been on the decline the past couple of years, matching the music industry at large. Will the fifth buck the trend? source

Tech: iPhone 4S is doing crazy well in sales. Why’s that, exactly?

  • The iPhone 4s has sold 4 million units since friday. PCMag has a few ideas why Apple’s latest product has done so well so soon. There was hype surrounding the 4S, as there usually is with a new Apple product; rumors floated all summer about the phone, giving it an air of mystique. Add that to the passing of Steve Jobs, and you have a good amount of buzz. The phone is now available on more networks and in more countries, two demographics that the iPhone 4 didn’t have for its release. Plus, owning an iPhone comes with some sort of blood contract, right? source

World: As the ice caps get smaller, so do Earth’s plants and animals. Wait, what?

  • 45% of species are shrinking over time, a new study says source
  • » Blame climate change, the study says: It’s like scary, natural shrink ray. But, yep, animals such as fish, reptiles, birds and mammals are all smaller than generations previous — apparently a difference of one degree celsius is enough to make things smaller. The researchers, who published their study in the journal Nature Climate Change, warn to not jump to conclusions, though: “We do not yet know the exact mechanisms involved, or why some organisms are getting smaller while others are unaffected,” the authors of the study, based at the National University of Singapore, said in an interview. “Until we understand more, we could be risking negative consequences that we can’t yet quantify.”

U.S.: Vitamin E: Um, you should be careful with that one, guys

  • If you have normal levels, the vitamin is probably of no benefit, and if you take too much, you can be harmed.
  • Dr. Eric Klein of the Cleveland Clinic • Discussing the potential benefit of taking Vitamin E supplements — for most people, there is none. But there is a major downside. A recent study showed that men who took vitamin E supplements (which have very high levels of the vitamin) were 17% more likely to get prostate cancer — even once they stopped taking the supplements.  Lesson of the day: Take vitamins in moderation.  source

World: Hurricane Jova, two other storms strengthen in Pacific

  • Another strong storm in a strong Pacific hurricane season: Currently a Category 3 storm, Jova could become a Category 4 relatively soon. It’s already the fifth major Pacific hurricane this season, and it’s one of three storms currently brewing along the Mexican coast. Either way, when it makes landfall, expect “torrential rain and coastal flooding.” Different models suggest that the storm could head a number of different directions — including a direct hit on Mexico. We’ll be keeping an eye on this one, folks. source
