Culture: Will Arnett/David Cross joints: Not one, but TWO of them

  • “running Wilde”: Will Arnett’s JointWe’ve already mentioned this at some point, but this “Arrested Development” mini-reunion featuring Arnett, Cross and Mitchell Hurwitz premieres on September 21st. (Cross isn’t in this clip but will be in the series.) This series features Arnett as a rich guy attempting to win Keri Russell’s heart. Not a stretch, right?
  • “Todd Margaret”: David Cross’ joint In case you want to see David Cross in the kind of front-and-center role that Tobias Funkë always deserved, here you go. This is headed to IFC in October, and the premise is promising in a “Mr. Show” kind of way. Let’s hope it’s not forgotten and quietly canceled, like the excellent and lamented “Party Down.”

Biz: Most businesses wouldn’t get nicked by Bush tax-cut reversal

  • 3% of all businesses would be affected by rescinding the high-end of the Bush tax cuts
  • 8% of non-hobby businesses would be affected, say conservative groups
  • 750k the real number of businesses that would roughly be affected by the cuts source
  • » And a possibly positive side-effect: Studies have shown that increases in tax rates at the top end can lead to more small businesses starting up because of the tax breaks offered, boosting overall growth anyway.

Tech: Diaspora, post-release: No love at all from programmers

  • Haters gon’ Hate. If you’ve read Hacker News lately, you might have noticed a recent trend of programmers basically tearing apart the code from Diaspora. There are lots of reasons for this, but the biggest one is that the security backbone appears to be lacking. This guy put it this way: “The more I read, the more bad things I found. They’re going to need a complete overhaul to fix this.” These wet-behind-the-ears college students have now been accused of creating some of the worst clearly marked pre-alpha code known to man. Which leads us to ask, have they seen the new Chatroulette? If they really want to feel manly, they should stop ripping on NYU students and start ripping on 17-year-old Russian kids that are friends with Sean Parker. That’ll show ’em.  source

Politics: It looks like Palin’s running for prez

  • It has become very apparent to everyone on her staff that she is preparing to run for president.
  • A former Sarah Palin aide • On the half-term Governor’s national ambitions. The source also notes that her staff is now “writing speeches, preparing talking points, [and] picking congressmen to endorse.” In other news, we’ve started researching housing prices in Canada.  source

Politics: Christine O’Donnell: Don’t let my “youthful fervor” dissuade you

  • She was REALLY into her beliefs in her 20s. Delaware’s Republican Senate candidate did some things she regrets, except instead of getting a tattoo and digging way deep into her rocker chick phase, she went ultra-conservative and said some really insane things about AIDS and stuff. So now she’s backing off. “I was in my 20s and very excited and passionate about my newfound faith,” she said. “But I can assure you, my faith has matured. And when I go to Washington D.C., it will be the Constitution on which I base all of my decisions, not my personal beliefs.” Will that be enough to convince people? source

Biz: Sometimes, Groupon can accidentally strangle small a business

  • The experience jaded me, and the interactions with the few bad Groupon customers we had jaded our staff. After all of this, I find myself not even willing to buy Groupons because I know how it could hurt a business.
  • Posie’s Cafe owner Jessie Burke • Explaining how her experience with Groupon greatly damaged her Portland, Oregon-based business. Her deal, which offered a $6 deal for a $13 item, only earned her $3 for each item sold, with the other $3 going to Groupon. There wasn’t a cap on how many people could use it, so hundreds of people used it over a six-month period. At one point, the deal strangled her business so badly that she had to put $8,000 of her own money in just to cover payroll. While she doesn’t blame Groupon for her experience (she’s way quicker to blame herself), the post has spread online like wildfire over the last couple of days because of the implications it has for one of online shopping’s brightest shining stars. Groupon’s response is pretty reasonable. She’s right to blame herself, but Groupon should’ve told her how to avoid such a situation. source

Tech: Comparison: Posterous is big. Tumblr is a phenomenon.

  • Posterous is growing, yeah, but Tumblr is basically going to be the next Twitter. Eight million unique visitors per month versus less than two million? It’s not really a contest. (Though in Posterous’ defense, though, other companies such as Reddit have complained that these stats  aren’t always accurate – we know, for example, that our stats are totally off and our numbers in July, for example, are nearly triple what Compete says they are.) source
