Culture: Rich Cronin, one third of “Summer Girls”-belting LFO, dies of leukemia

  • LFO had a couple hits, leukemia made Rich Cronin sick, and sadly, he died at the end of the summer, of the summer. He liked girls that wore Abercromie & Fitch, he fought hard and he had one wish – to teach people about acute myelogenous leukemia. Cronin, 35, co-wrote “Summer Girls,” the 1999 boy-band song above. He died of the disease today. Love or hate the song, let’s just admit that he lived a pretty good, well-meaning life. RIP man. source

Tech: Google Instant Search looks awesome but has downsides

  • Google’s Instant Search is pretty darn cool, yes, but it has some possible downsides. A lot of businesses have built their models around Google’s SEO and paid search benefits, which could be harder to grab using this model. (If people aren’t misspelling words, for example …) Search Engine Land is particularly concerned about the effects on “long tail” searches: “With our example, starting the query with “Las”, shows ads for Las Vegas. Some of those ads are for hotels. Why would a user continue typing if they see hotel ads already?” Gawker, on the other hand, is more concerned with finding unfortunate word combinations that come up, such as the one above. source

Politics: One former Craigslist sex worker not a fan of the “Adult Services” ban

  • For all the “victims” of the “adult services” section of Craigslist.org, I would venture there are a considerable number of individuals like myself – free thinking, entrepreneurial human beings with choices and responsibilities – whose real-life experiences, not to mention sources of income – are being stifled by our so-called advocates.
  • Former Craigslist sex worker Melissa Petro • Criticizing those who pressured Craigslist to take down the “Adult Services” ads. Petro made the choice on her own accord, and wasn’t forced into anything. When she didn’t want to do it anymore, she stopped. “I found the lifestyle physically demanding, emotionally taxing and spiritually bankrupting, and so I made a decision to desist,” she wrote. source

U.S.: Gulf oil spill: BP tries to shift some of the blame with report

  • The company just released a 193-page report on the spill. Claiming “a complex and interlinked series of mechanical failures, human judgments, engineering design, operational implementation and team interfaces,” BP’s new report tries to spread the blame in a number of places, noting some design flaws but also focusing more on the cement job on the well (done by Haliburton) and failings of the workers on the rig (who were Transocean employees) and trying not to shoulder all the blame themselves. Consider the report an attempt at shoring up PR and a preview of future court cases. source
