Politics: Nancy Pelosi House Minority Leader, but Heath Shuler gave her fits

  • It wasn’t about winning or losing this race. It was about truly making a difference within our caucus, to ensure that the moderates were heard.
  • Rep. Heath Shuler • Explaining why his loss in the race against Nancy Pelosi for House Minority Leader was still a bit of a victory. The caucus may have voted for Pelosi, but they gave Shuler 43 votes, which is more than a fifth of the 193 Democrats still left. There’s dissent within her own party, which will be hard for her to get past. As for Shuler, a Blue Dog Democrat, he gets to go back to North Carolina and tell his constituents that he took on Nancy Pelosi. This is why Shuler is still here and other Blue Dogs are not. source

Politics: Heath Shuler: I have no real shot against Nancy Pelosi

  • If she doesn’t step aside, I will challenge her … [but] I can add and subtract pretty well.
  • Rep. Heath Shuler • Admitting that while he plans to take on Nancy Pelosi for the House Minority Leader position, he realizes she’s pretty powerful and it will be hard for him to win. Which is too bad for him, because he feels he “entire House was pushed farther and farther away from moderate viewpoints” and that the Democrats are “too far left” on key bills. Maybe he can fight James Clyburn for that Assistant to the Regional Manager job. source

Politics: Heath Shuler: Terrible quarterback, but Pelosi’s worst nightmare?

  • At this point, no one has come forward, no one in leadership for a long time. It will be very tough. It is probably a race we can’t win. But we need a moderate voice in the Democratic Party.
  • Blue Dog Democrat Rep. Heath Shuler • Suggesting he might challenge Nancy Pelosi for the House leadership. Shuler, known as much for being conservative on social issues as he is for his mediocre NFL career, has been one of Pelosi’s strongest critics in the wake of her planned run for House Minority Leader. Shuler would be an interesting wrench in the whole House Leadership mess, and we bet he’d get a bunch of support simply because he offers a clear alternative to Pelosi, who’s not exactly popular right now. source

Politics: Awkward: Steny Hoyer chooses to fight James Clyburn for his job

  • awkward Despite much controversy over her reign, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi decides that she wants to be House Minority Leader – pushing Steny Hoyer out of his job.
  • awkwarder Hoyer decides, rather than battle Pelosi, he’ll run for House Minority Whip – against James Clyburn, who’s probably the most powerful black member of the House. source
  • » Why this is kind of pathetic: If Hoyer really wanted to make some waves, he could’ve taken on Pelosi. Instead, he’s pushing for the second-ranked position. Both men will remain Democratic leaders, yeah, but if Pelosi is so unpopular among so many people, why not try for her job? You might just win. (On a side note, we have no opinion on the Pelosi thing.)

Politics: Nancy Pelosi’s next House move, in historical perspective

  • 1998 Newt Gingrich steps down from his House leadership role after a particularly rough midterm; his party was still in the majority
  • 2006 Dennis Hastert leaves his House leadership role after his party lost the majority; he later left the House entirely without much fuss
  • 2010 Nancy Pelosi defies the logic set by previous House speakers and announces that she plans to run for House Minority Leader (oh boy) source

Politics: John Boehner can’t get behind Mitch McConnell’s “one-term” pitch

  • That’s Senator McConnell’s statement and his opinion. I think the American people want us to focus on their message during the election: stop the spending, get rid of the uncertainty. Let’s get around to creating jobs again and staying focused on what the American people want us to focus on is my number one priority.
  • Likely Speaker of the House John Boehner • Offering a modestly disagreeable tone towards his Senate counterpart, who thinks that it’s best to stonewall the hell out of the Obama administration until they can get another Republican in the White House. (Screw that guy.) Anyway, Boehner doesn’t exactly have a lot nice to say about Obama right now. “There seems to be some denial on the part of the president and other Democratic leaders of the message that was sent by the American people,” he suggests. Perhaps. But what do you expect the guy to do, John, cower in a ball for the next two years like your brother Mitch? source

Politics: House leaders on both sides trash Colbert for hearing

  • majority Steny Hoyer had this to say: “I think his testimony was not appropriate … an embarrassment for Colbert more than for the House.” Translation: “I’m completely out of touch.”
  • minority John Boehner used Colbert’s routine as a way to attack the Democrats: “They have time to bring a comedian to Washington, D.C., but they don’t have time to end the uncertainty.” source
  • For what it’s worth: Colbert may have gotten ripped by House leadership on both sides, but House Speaker Nancy Pelosi had his back. “He’s an American. He comes before the committee. He has a point of view,” she said. “It can bring attention to an important issue like immigration. I think it’s great.” This was the correct response, Steny.

Culture: John Boehner throws down gauntlet on Obama’s economic peeps

  • President Obama should ask for – and accept – the resignations of the remaining members of his economic team, starting with Secretary Geithner and Larry Summers, the head of the National Economic Council.
  • House Minority Leader John Boehner • Throwing a grenade into the whole debate on Obama’s economic policies. Great. While Obama’s probably going to ignore this request, the fact tof the matter is that he’s not exactly on steady ground because his economic policies haven’t really turned the economy around as of yet. But his people blame Bush’s economic policies. Which, you know, is totally not a stretch of the imagination. source
