World: Sad news of the night: Wyclef Jean won’t be Haiti’s next president

Here’s the look of a man who won’t be allowed the opportunity to screw up his homeland (unless he decides to fight some more). Poor guy. source

Culture: Why not? New dollar de$igns! (Including a Obama $1 bill)

  • These gifts from the design world come to us from the Dowling Duncan design studio as part of a yearly Dollar ReDe$sign Project, whose goal is to update our currency into something a bit more with-the-times. We can’t imagine a more controversial $1 bill than that thang. (Hat tip and a link to our buddy Charles Apple for this one.) source

Politics: The real sticking point that Park51 is facing? Not controversy, money

  • They could have obviously done a lot better in explaining who they are if they really wanted to get approval. There’s a real question as to whether there’s money behind this.
  • New York publicist Ken Sunshine • Describing the real issue the “Ground Zero Mosque” is facing – and it’s purely logistical. They simply don’t have the money to build a $100 million community center. In fact, the group behind the development only raised $18,255 in 2008, the last statement available for them. The controversy isn’t helping, either, of course. “They are in the process of hiring an architect — but here’s the thing,” said Park51 spokesperson Oz Sultan, “you’re not going to get the architect or the engineer because they don’t want to be involved in this.” Wouldn’t it be funny if this was all over nothing? source

Music: A suicide at a Swell Season show: A Swell Season show? Really?

  • What an awful incident. Just awful. To the jerk who’s ready to pull out a “Falling Slowly” joke here: Don’t. During the show at Mountain Winery in Saratoga, Calif., someone reportedly jumped from the roof of the stage and fell in front of singer Glen Hansard. Which, as you might imagine, is kind of a shocking sight to see at an outdoor concert by a group that became famous from an extremely sweet movie. Our prayers, and theirs, are with the person’s family and friends. source

Politics: The Rev. Franklin Graham learned absolutely nothing from his dad

  • I think the president’s problem is that he was born a Muslim, his father was a Muslim. The seed of Islam is passed through the father like the seed of Judaism is passed through the mother. He was born a Muslim, his father gave him an Islamic name.
  • Rev. Franklin Graham • Blowing smoke over the controversy around Obama’s faith. Because, you know what, this really helps our country and gives us another fake controversy to worry about. May we remind everyone that Franklin Graham was the same guy who wasn’t allowed to pray at the Pentagon during the National Day of Prayer because of his comments on the Islamic faith. (We gave him a slight show of support back then, but now we’re not so sure.) How does giving this jerk a megaphone help anything? See, the difference between him and his father, the Rev. Billy Graham, is that Billy built his legacy on bringing people together. Franklin is building it on dividing people. Shameful. This is the problem with our country. We’re building useless divisions. source

Tech: Foursquare isn’t doing too bad considering, y’know, Facebook Places

  • cause Facebook launched its Foursquare-aping “Facebook Places” feature, leading many to claim that the service was going to die soon. Because that’s what Facebook does. They rip off other services.
  • effect Instead, Foursquare co-founder Dennis Crowley tweeted this: “Just heard from The @HarryH that today was @foursquare’s biggest day ever in terms of new user signups.” Hmm. Interesting. source
