World: Swedish nuclear bunker seems like a fitting home for Wikileaks

  • Their servers are going to live like kings. This lair, 98 feet down within the Pionen White Mountains in Sweden, will be holding some of the Wikileaks servers, which need a cool spot to hide from evil governments. You don’t get much cooler than a nuclear bunker that looks like it was designed by Ikea on the weekends. (By the way, they won’t be alone: The space also doubles as a home for colocation provider Banhof.) source

U.S.: Hurricane Earl leaning in the general direction of the Outer Banks

  • A small error of 100 miles in the wrong direction could be a huge impact difference. Even a minor shift back to the west could bring impacts to portions of the coastline from the mid-Atlantic northwards.
  • National Hurricane Center Director Bill Read • Discussing how bad Hurricane Earl could be for the East Coast. The hurricane on its current track is unlikely to hit the coast with its full force, but it’s probably going to nail the outlying islands of North Carolina and then go up the East Coast, heading towards Cape Cod and Maine by Friday night. Protip: Careful about planning a Labor Day Weekend trip to the Outer Banks. source

Politics: Glenn Beck’s “The Blaze”: Well, the design is kinda cool

  • Credit where credit’s due: The Blaze, clearly Glenn Beck’s attempt at a Huffington Post-style site, has a design that tops pretty much every site of its kind out there. HuffPo is an exercise in throwing a ton of crap on a single page. The Daily Caller, while it had an engaging pitch at launch, definitely had a by-the-numbers design that looked out of date before it had ever heard of Journolist. The Blaze, while sticking with WordPress, has a downright elegant, photo-heavy, type-focused look. Too bad it’s as adversarial and divisive as Beck can be. source

  • As you know, I have been the interim CEO, while we looked for the right person, and I will still remain actively involved in the product, but am handing over the day-to-day running of the business to Matt.
  • Digg founder Kevin Rose • Handing over his role as interim CEO of Digg to Matt Williams. The timing, of course, is what people are going to be focused on. Whether or not Rose is leaving Digg because of the drama around the redesign or because of something else, Digg users are going to understandably focus on the fact that his departure happened at a very important juncture for the company. source

U.S.: Obama: The (combat end of the) Iraq war is officially over and stuff

  • Mission accomplished? Obama’s presidential address tonight marked the end of a long war (as far as combat operations go), and the next step will be to move forward and deal with more pressing concerns – Afghanistan and the economy. Now, there were certain things that might cause great disagreement – the somewhat firm emphasis that we’ll be getting out entirely next year is kind of a biggie – but ultimately, average people aren’t in this mode anymore. They want to see a stronger economy, not a never-ending, ultra-contentious war. source
