U.S.: Todd Palin may as well have been the governor of Alaska

  • I’m getting calls from Soldotna about the next judge appointment. Is (redacted) on the list, I’m getting calls from folks hoping he’s not selected. Let me know what’s happening so I can put to rest some of the rumors.
  • Todd Palin • In an e-mail he exchanged with Alaskan government officials. He sent a lot of these kinds of e-mails – over 1,400, around 1,200 of which were released to MSNBC under a Freedom of Information Act request. Apparently, Todd had a ton of power when Sarah was governor – more than most first ladies or first dudes have. That should look pretty good for Sarah’s career, eh? source

Tech: Google underestimates the uses of Chrome’s “Incognito Mode”

  • For times when you want to browse in stealth mode, for example, to plan surprises like gifts or birthdays, Google Chrome offers the incognito browsing mode.
  • A note on the Google Chrome help page • Regarding the site’s incognito mode, which allows one to hide their browsing habits from their cache. This is hilarious, because everyone knows the feature’s in there to hide people’s porn browsing habits. It’s possible, though, that the surprise gift might be porn. source

Culture: Flip a coin, keep your stuff: How Kate Walsh is getting divorced

  • The “Private Practice” star is literally flipping a coin with her ex-hubby. It sounds completely unbelievable, but Kate Walsh and ex-husband Alex Young have a clause in their settlement that suggests just that. “One-half of the community property furniture and artwork to be divided by alternating picks after the flip of a coin to determine who will pick first,” the settlement agreement reads. Wonder who will get shortchanged. source

U.S.: The FDA wants to make serving sizes on food actually realistic

  • If you put on a meaningful portion size, it would scare a lot of people. They would see, ‘I’m going to get 300 calories from that, or 500 calories.’
  • University of North Carolina nutrition professor Barry Popkin • Regarding the possibility that the FDA could change serving sizes to match how people actually eat food. Some foods have serving sizes of just an ounce or a cup despite the fact that people eat far more than that. A serving of cereal is just three-quarters of a cup, despite the fact kids often eat two cups. The serving sizes were based on studies of how much people ate in the 70s or 80s, but often suggest unrealistically small servings. This is a good idea. source
