U.S.: Immigration: Hey, let’s throw another thing on Obama’s plate, OK?

  • Couldn’t this battle wait for now, guys? Today, Democratic Rep. Luis V. Gutierrez introduced a bill to reform immigration. Now, obviously, this battle needs to come up, especially considering how heated it got during the Bush years. But let’s play devil’s advocate here. You have a president who is dealing with these things (among others), in order of importance: Unemployment, health care, the economic crisis, Afghanistan, Iraq, closing Guantanamo, gay rights and making sure Bo the dog gets kibble. And now we want to throw immigration on top of all of this? This seems like it could wait until year three. We’d rather see Obama deal with all that other stuff the right way. source

Offbeat: This coconut-wielding octopus is a big-time show-off

  • Because, really, why not? This octopus proves exactly how brilliant its species supposedly is. It can use this coconut shell as shelter and as a tool for digging. And it also can do some craaaaaazy things with its tentacles, too. source

Politics: Tempest in a teapot: A student’s too-accurate Christmas depiction

This crucified Jesus riled people when a report said a school suspended an 8-year-old for drawing it. The school claims he was actually given a psychiatric test. source

Politics: Let’s take a moment to ponder the D.C. gay marriage bill

  • I’m going to use the full power of the black church to kill this bill. I feel pity for those who voted for this because they have defied the will of God. We have warned them.
  • Rev. Anthony Evans of Mount Zion Baptist Church • On the bill in favor of gay marriage that passed today in the District. The bill passed the council today 11-2 (but needs a signature from Mayor Adrian Fenty that it’s bound to get). For those who don’t live in D.C., we’d like to point out a couple of things: D.C. has one of the largest (and strongest) gay communities in the country, and Congress has the right to block the law’s passage. A couple of loudmouths could bully Congress and convince them to take away a huge victory for the District’s gay community. To us, this says one thing: The District’s rights shouldn’t be controlled by Congress like this. It’s unfair, and it wouldn’t be an issue in Virgina or Maryland despite the fact that they’re less than 10 miles away. This disparity needs to be fixed so folks like Evans can’t take advantage of it. source

Tech: Microsoft: Uh, yeah, we totally Plurked that code. Sorry.

  • The company blames a Chinese vendor for the theft. A day after basically getting emasculated by a small developer called Plurk, Microsoft admitted that some of the code for their new Chinese microblogging program, Juku, had been taken from the company. “In the wake of this incident, Microsoft and our MSN China joint venture will be taking a look at our practices around applications code provided by third-party vendors,” they said. Probably a good idea. source

Culture: Howard Dean (and the left) turn on the Senate’s health plan

  • This is essentially the collapse of health care reform in the United States Senate. Honestly the best thing to do right now is kill the Senate bill, go back to the House, start the reconciliation process, where you only need 51 votes and it would be a much simpler bill.
  • Former DNC chair Howard Dean • Saying that the Senate bill isn’t worth saving in its current form. Why’s that? Blame some guy named Joe Lieberman. Why does Joe Lieberman Howard Dean hate America? Actually, he’s not alone. DailyKos founder Markos Moulitas also says it should die in its current form. As do a few other prominent liberal voices. source

Politics: Video flashback: Joe Lieberman wanted to expand Medicare

  • Why does Joe Lieberman hate America? In this video, Lieberman suggests the very option he publicly killed this week. The uncomfortable kid over to the right just gave the left a ton of ammo in the health care fight by asking this question, even though he called Medicare “Medichoice.”

Culture: Golf writers admit to being clueless about Tiger Woods

  • Everywhere I go these days, people who know what I do for a living keep asking the same question: Did you have any idea this was going on? I smile and sheepishly shake my head: No, I did not, never even a whiff.
  • Washington Post golf writer Leonard Shapiro • Discussing how the golf press missed the Tiger Woods story pretty badly. Why’s that? Simply put, they rarely dealt with him off the golf course, and when they did, it was during carefully vetted 10-minute interviews. Shapiro asked his industry colleagues if they had a hint of Woods’ private life, and none of them did. Surprising, to say the least, especially since these were the guys that put Woods on a pedestal all these years. source
