Politics: Conservatives turn Florida into new Republican party battleground

  • The only question now is what kind of Republican will Florida send to Washington next year: a pro-growth Republican with a record of fiscal conservatism or a big-government Republican with a record of tax increases?
  • Club for Growth President Chris Chocola • Describing his group’s decision to support ex-state lawmaker Marco Rubio over former governor Charlie Crist in next year’s Senate race. (Crist has the Republican Party’s support, by the way.) With the move, they’re attempting to remove so-called RINOs (Republicans in Name Only) from office. Because this move worked out for them so well in New York’s 23rd District. • source

U.S.: CIA: The Fort Hood shooter tried to contact al-Qaeda

  • It’s the first real evidence of a terrorist link so far if true. Yesterday, the Associated Press wrote about a story linking the Fort Hood shooter to a mosque where thousands of people go daily to pray. We didn’t run it because the link seemed very thin, and in fact found it offensive that the AP would make such a link. This, however, is something. The CIA told ABC News today that the shooter, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, tried months ago to get in touch with people related to al-Qaeda. And they’ve known about it for a while. No word on whether he succeeded. source

Biz: Rupert Murdoch: We’re gonna drop Google from our papers’ sites

  • News Corp. Chairman Rupert Murdoch is ready drop Google, based on this interview. (It’s long but the meat of what we care about is right at the beginning.) However, as paidContent points out, he doesn’t completely understand how the Wall Street Journal uses Google to promote stories even with its pay wall. (Instead of just getting chunks of stories, you get the first couple free, then get blocked.) Regarding the evolution of newspapers to paid content, Murdoch says, “Everyone can afford a newspaper. They’re the cheapest things in the world and what you get out of it is fabulous. And it will be even cheaper when you get it electronically.” We hope so, Rupe.source

U.S.: Good grades for good reporting? Prosecutors attack journalism program

  • Why are we talking about our grades when we should be talking about whether there’s an innocent man in prison?
  • Evan Benn • A former student of Northwestern journalism professor David Protess. Protess’ investigative journalism class is under investigation in the case of a 1978 killing of a security guard in Illinois. Why’s that? His class tends to uncover leads in cases such as this one (where they have evidence to prove they have the wrong man), and the prosecutor’s suggesting that students do it not for the reporting or the investigation, but for better grades. Deplorable action by the prosecution. (FYI: This is an AP story we linked; we don’t like to do this, but felt the subject matter was too good and vital to not run.) • source
