Tech, U.S.: President Obama’s peeps really dig this whole tweeting thing

  • It is on our White House Twitter, so yes, I can confirm.
  • A White House aide • On whether there was an upcoming presidential news conference scheduled. The White House Press Corps didn’t receive a direct official confirmation until two hours after the @whitehouse tweet – which kinda peeved them off. Reporter Julie Mason said, “If the administration wants to have a twitter conference, then Twitter is the way to go. For a press conference? Notify the press.” ZING!  • source

Music: Our Saturday Mixtape mixes cheesy, classic, well-worn and hazy

  • 1. Lots of good memories come from this song – and from the Jayhawks. They’re an iconic band that never got huge, which is too bad. “Blue” is one of the ’90s best acoustic singles.
    2. We’re convinced that Max Tundra has no clue what cheesy is. He sounds like Michael Jackson on acid on “Which Song.”
    3. Ah, the preprogrammed hi-hat – Daedelus stretches and bastardizes it heavily on “Get off Your Hi-Hats,” which is interesting because you don’t know where he’ll take it next.
    4. Kath Bloom is one of those forgotten-era songwriters appreciated by songwriters, none moreso than Red House Painter Mark Kozelek, who breathes new life into “Finally.”
    5. You can feel the tension bleeding through the shoegazey aura of Cass McCombs’ “You Saved My Life,” which begs to be your new favorite love song. (It’s ours for sure.)source

World: It hasn’t been a very good week for the Tour de France, that’s for sure

  • There’s many close calls between riders and spectators … Sad news. May she RIP.
  • Lance Armstrong on his Twitter feed • Regarding the death of a 61-year-old spectator during the 14th stage of the tour between Colmar and Besancon. The woman was hit by a police motorcycle as she was crossing the road. This comes just a day after two tour riders were shot and injured by an air-rifle.  • source

U.S.: Dun dun dun!!! Jumbo squid “menaces” the coast of San Diego

  • You can’t make this stuff up. Scuba divers off the coast of San Diego say the beaked Humboldt squid, a carnivorous and sometimes aggressive sea creature, has been engaging in some *pretty freaky* activity. Although their normal habitat is in deeper waters further south, they’ve been getting chummy with Californians – and the love isn’t mutual. One diver said a group of squid swam up to him, inspected him to see if he was edible and then kept hitting him on the back of the head. Err … how long until this becomes a giant blockbuster movie? source

Tech: Amazon deletes Kindle books, adds irony in the process

  • Amazon says this is a ‘rarity,’ but even once is too many times for bull$*(% like this to happen. … And of course the fact that this happened to 1984, of all books, makes this even more surreal.
  • Gizmodo writer Adam Frucci • Regarding Amazon’s latest struggle with the Kindle – the fact that they deleted copies of George Orwell’s “1984” and “Animal Farm” remotely. While it appears to be a rights issue more than anything else (i.e. the publisher didn’t have those rights), the truth of the matter is, Amazon deleted books in the very style that makes them look like Big Brother, which should concern Kindle owners. • source
