Culture: Pixar gives 10-year-old girl her dying wish: To see “Up” on DVD

  • When I watched it, I had really no idea about the content of the theme of the movie. I just know that word ‘Up’ and all of the balloons and I swear to you, for me it meant that (Colby) was going to go up. Up to heaven.
  • Lisa Curtin • Whose 10-year-old daughter, Colby, was able to see “Up” thanks to some really awesome Pixar staffers who hooked her up with a copy of the DVD. Colby, who was diagnosed with vascular cancer three years ago, died seven hours later. Sad story, but awesome in a heartbreaking way. • source

Sports: Donte Stallworth: Persona non grata in the NFL right now

  • What he did Stallworth pleaded guilty to DUI involuntary manslaughter after hitting a pedestrian while drunk and was sentenced to a relatively light and highly-criticized 30 days in jail. The Miami, Florida court also took away his drivers’ license for life and also sentenced him to two years of house arrest and eight years of probation.
  • What the NFL did Following the league’s standard of harsh penalties, Commissioner Roger Goodell indefinitely suspended Stallworth without pay. “There is no reasonable dispute that your continued eligibility for participation at this time would undermine the integrity of and public confidence in our league,” he said. Ouch. source

Offbeat, U.S.: Yesterday’s feel-good story doesn’t feel so good anymore

  • DNA proves the break in the 1955 missing child case isn’t true. Poor John Robert Barnes. Yesterday, Barnes came out in the press to talk about his belief that he was Steven Damman, a kid plucked from the mean streets of Long Island in 1955. Beyond creating lots of attention for himself, it was fodder for the FBI to compare the DNA. Which they did today. Which they confirmed was not a match. Sadly. By the way, Barnes’ dad is still alive and calls his story BS. Good luck patching that one up, dude. source

U.S.: Gay-rights put their foot down and ask for Obama’s help

  • What we need now is leadership from the president, Congress and state officials to deliver that change. I’m frustrated and disappointed that the administration has not yet delivered on the vision we share for a more equal America.
  • Evan Wolfson • Who represents Freedom to Marry, a national pro-gay-marriage organization. Despite having strong support for their initiatives during the presidential campaign, Barack Obama has found himself up against the wall of Washington politics, playing it safe so that the efforts don’t derail his other initiatives. And gay-rights activists aren’t happy. • source
