Biz, World: The Guardian says screw print – they’re going Twitter-only.

  • Who needs presses when you’re on the forefront of technology? The Guardian, one of the best papers in the U.K. – hell, the world – is going to try a great experiment, starting today. They’re going Twitter-only. Among the new technologies they’re launching include “Gutter,” a collaboration with Twitter that will filter out all notable liberal opinion. We wish them the best. Also, in other news, our rent would be due today if we lived in London. source

Biz, Politics: Opinion: If GM or Chrysler fail, is nationalization really that bad?

  • It’s the kind of daunting task that calls for a great national project. Nationalizing the first automaker to go would give us a lab for that project, and save American manufacturing to boot.
  • Non Vivant Blogger John Zwick • Suggesting the idea of a nationally-reworked car company; Zwick suggests that the it would allow the country to move towards cleaner, greener cars and into a more modern approach to an industry famous for bloat. We’re sure some might claim it’s socialism or *gasp* communism, but that’s why this article is clearly marked as opinion, so you jerks can’t claim we’re the ones saying it. As it is, Zwick is making a reasoned argument. • source

U.S.: This domestic violence story is unbelievably heart-wrenching

  • I don’t have words to articulate how this officer maintained his ability to do his job. To go in and witness that first thing, just as he opens the door and stay on his radio through the whole thing …
  • Milton, Mass. Police Chief Richard G. Wells Jr. • On the first officer at the scene of a domestic violence call, who witnessed Kerby Revelus decapitate his five-year old sister, Bianca. Revelus also murdered his 17-year-old sister Samantha, but police came just in time to save 9-year-old Sarafina; Kerby, who had a police record and a history of domestic violence, was shot dead in the process. • source

Tech: OK, print’s dead, graphic designers. Here’s how to go Web.

  • Take print philosophy online In this era where the Internet is quickly changing how people read and gather content, it’s becoming more and more clear that you have to perk up your web skillz as a graphic designer. But that doesn’t mean you have to give up your print techniques – Brian Hoff of DesignCubicle notes that they might even be an asset. (And cool grids already exist, which should ease the pain. Whoo.)
  • Cool examples of print as web Obviously, The New York Times does a pretty great job approximating the print experience. But other sites, such as Jason Santa Maria’s amazing personal Web site focus on doing something most sites suck at: Providing content-based design rather than forcing content into a rigid CMS. Food for thought, designers looking to switch over. You can do this. source

Sports: Thanks U. of Kentucky, you made Memphis really sad. :(

  • John Calipari, a man torn by opportunity. The coach of the perennially-hot Memphis decided to leave for the bluegrass of Kentucky. It was a heart-wrenching decision for both Memphis, which has soared to great heights under Calipari’s helm, and Calipari himself, who will be coaching an iconic college basketball team that’s fallen on hard times. Memphis students and fans begged Calipari not to do it, but it was too late. Peace, brotha. source
