World: Qaddafi knows what caused the Tunisian collapse

  • Corruption? Unemployment? A restricted press? Not according to Colonel Qaddafi. The Libyan leader, who has held power for over forty years, weighed in on Tunisia’s collapse, blaming “WikiLeaks which publishes information written by lying ambassadors in order to create chaos.” As The New York Times’ Robert Mackey observes, this may be a reiteration of a conspiratorial belief birthed from Iran’s leadership; that Wikileaks is acting as a propaganda arm of the United States, strategically leaking false cables to American benefit. But seriously, Julian Assange as a government shill? You’ve got a long road to hoe, Muammar.

  • You’d think, seeing that the guy on the right (former Swiss banker Rudolf Elmer) probably risked his hide to give Julian Assange detail on prominent individuals who used Swiss banks to evade taxes, Assange would muster up enough happiness to show a smile. World: Wikileaks, Stuxnet collide to create awesome article about Iran

  • Iran doesn’t have the bomb yet. But they’ve been trying really hard to get it, according to the latest round of data released from Wikileaks. The Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten, which reportedly has all 250,000 diplomatic cables, has been releasing them slowly but surely, and the latest one is kinda sorta a big deal. The cables portray it as kind of last-gasp attempt for Iran to jump-start its diplomatic prowess. “A race exists between the bomb and financial collapse,” one French nuclear expert explained in the cable. Some quick numbers:
  • 350 Iranian companies and groups were reportedly involved in the pursuit of nuclear technology
  • 30+ countries that have contacts Iran is trying to use to make this bomb thingy happen
  • no Iran doesn’t have much in the way of its own uranium, making their job tougher source
  • » Oh, and remember Stuxnet? That computer worm seemingly designed to damage Iran’s nuclear program was reportedly a American-Israeli joint, according to this here article by The New York Times. It was reportedly so effective at causing a malware ruckus that it set Iran’s nuclear program back by several years. Favorite line: “The computer program also secretly recorded what normal operations at the nuclear plant looked like, then played those readings back to plant operators, like a pre-recorded security tape in a bank heist, so that it would appear that everything was operating normally while the centrifuges were actually tearing themselves apart.” Class.

World: Why’s the U.S. government subpoenaing Twitter about Wikileaks?

  • If the Iranian government was to attempt to coercively obtain this information from journalists and activists of foreign nations, human rights groups around the world would speak out.
  • Julian Assange • Expressing anger towards the U.S. government’s subpoena of Twitter over Wikileaks, which has been under wraps until now. Wikileaks is also concerned about whether they’ve been doing the same thing with We’re with Assange. He has a perfectly valid point here. We put the U.S. up to a double-standard that we wouldn’t be caught dead allowing the rest of the world to follow. And it doesn’t get any more obvious until secret subpoenas are part of the deal. It’s times like these that we wish Twitter was decentralized. source

Politics: Glenn Greenwald reminds CNN what journalism is. (It’s Wikileaks)

  • What we love about this clip: Glenn Greenwald calls out not one but TWO CNN personalities for being biased against Wikileaks. Greenwald, while obviously in Julian Assange’s court, nevertheless makes multiple great points about the similarities between what journalism is and what Wikileaks is. Fact of matter – Wikileaks is creative destruction to government secrecy, and that’s why the government is uncomfortable. Now’s a good time to mention that CNN passed on releasing Wikileaks material. World: Julian Assange is writing a book. Here’s how much he’s gonna make

  • So, in case you couldn’t guess otherwise, Julian Assange is broke. Running a site like Wikileaks does not make one rich, and now that banks are clamping down on the organization, he’s forced to take desperate measures. Which means that the inevitable book is coming down the pipe a little sooner than anyone might have guessed. Which means, within a year, we’re going to see a movie, with Neil Patrick Harris playing our boy Julian. Probably. Anyway, here’s how much this autobiography thang is going to make him:
  • $502k coming from British publisher Canongate Books Ltd.
  • $800k more coming from American publisher Alfred A. Knopf
  • $1.7M total, which will go towards his legal defense source
  • » Our question: Will Bank of America, PayPal, Mastercard and Visa block payments to Knopf or Canongate Books? Because they’re directly helping Wikileaks.

OHHHHHHHHHH so it’s OK as long as it doesn’t involve Julian Assange.
