U.S.: Here’s a random awesome shot from the White House

  • We seriously hope that every president considers doing like the White House Flickr feed in the future. (In this pic, he’s talking to a bunch of advisers about Afghanistan. We will say this much: It’s telling that only one of them is female.) You feel like you’re really on the inside with these photos. And they make a great document for future generations. Isn’t it great that we have a president who gets social media?source

Politics: Jimmy Carter gets no media frenzy backup from Obama’s crew

  • We understand that people have disagreements with some of the decisions that we’ve made and some of the extraordinary actions that had to be undertaken by this administration.
  • White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs • On ex-president Jimmy Carter’s assertion that the current political climate is created by Obama’s race. Even if they did agree, it’s not like they’re going to out and say it – the administration’s already bloodthirsty opponents might get their teeth out and start biting. • source

U.S.: The beer summit went so well, there might be a sequel

  • We’re guessing Obama won’t be on board, though. Sgt. James Crowley says that the meeting between him and Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. went pretty well, and while nobody apologized, they plan to meet again. One thing that Crowley noted is that nobody apologized for their actions in the beer-off. We’re guessing that they’ll meet again where there aren’t any cameras, they’ll become the best of friends, buddy-comedy style and star in a big hit movie called “Arresting Officer.” source

Biz, U.S.: Cash-for-clunkers in the trash: Is it suspended, or isn’t it?

The money is nearly gone. The Transportation Department says it’s suspended. The White House says it isn’t. Dealers weren’t sure. PANIC! source

Politics: Missing from the White House beer thing: The 911 caller

  • Maybe it’s a guy thing. … She doesn’t like beer anyway.
  • Wendy Murphy • Attorney for Lucia Whalen, the woman who made the phone call that started a chain reaction that started with the arrest of Henry Louis Gates Jr. and will (hopefully) end today at the White House over (crappy domestic) beer. Murphy notes that her client, the only person who didn’t “overreact” in the situation, will be at work. Whalen, who isn’t white but a first-generation Portuguese-American, didn’t get an invite. • source

Music: Y’all like Brad Paisley and Allison Krauss? So does the White House

Some of country music’s biggest chart-toppers (also on the list: black country icon Charley Pride) showed up at Michelle Obama’s front porch last night. Hoo-doggy! source

Tech, U.S.: President Obama’s peeps really dig this whole tweeting thing

  • It is on our White House Twitter, so yes, I can confirm.
  • A White House aide • On whether there was an upcoming presidential news conference scheduled. The White House Press Corps didn’t receive a direct official confirmation until two hours after the @whitehouse tweet – which kinda peeved them off. Reporter Julie Mason said, “If the administration wants to have a twitter conference, then Twitter is the way to go. For a press conference? Notify the press.” ZING!  • source

U.S., World: Are North Korean hackers blocking access to U.S. sites?

  • South Korean sites are being affected, too. The Asian country’s National Intelligence Service has identified 26 Web sites that appear to be affected by “malicious programs,” including the White House’s Web site. The hackers appear to be trying to nail them using denial of service attacks. This sort of Web-based digital attack for political reasons isn’t new: A similar attack in Estonia happened two years ago. source
