Politics: The Tea Party movement wants to win, but can’t seem to organize

  • The movement is maturing. The rallies were good for last year, because that’s what we could do last year. This year we have to change things. We have got to win.
  • Tea Party Nation founder Judson Phillips • Regarding his organization’s goals (along with the overall movement’s goals) for 2010, which they tried to push at this weekend’s convention in Nashville. They want a conservative congress in 2010 and a conservative president in 2012. Problem is, the movement doesn’t really have a leader and kinda shares disdain for Republicans and Democrats. “This movement doesn’t need a leader,” said Anthony Shreeve of the Tennessee Tea Party Coalition. “It’s a ‘We the People’ movement.” Too bad he undercut his point by protesting the convention outside. Get organized, kids. source

U.S.: Senator Bob Corker: OnStar saved my daughter’s car!

  • I was telling the lady who handles that for me in Chattanooga, each month I was saying, ‘I don’t want to pay this, I don’t want to pay this.’ … Certainly it paid off tremendously last night.
  • Sen. Bob Corker • Describing how OnStar helped him get his daughter Julia’s car back after it was jacked from her on the mean streets of D.C. Wednesday night. The Tennessee Republican chose to keep the $18-a-month service, which came in handy when it helped police find the suspects – and the vehicle – at a Taco Bell in Seat Pleasant, Maryland. Dudes, you’re supposed to run for the border, but you’re not supposed to just stop there! source

U.S.: Idiot cop pressed the wrong key, sent racist e-mail to coworkers

  • There is nothing improper about this e-mail. Let’s see which of you are proud enough to send it on … BE PROUD TO BE WHITE!
  • An e-mail chain letter that got Tennessee State Trooper Brent Gobbel in trouble • But only after he sent it to 787 fellow coworkers. The e-mail espoused a white-pride stance, specifically in regard to police officers. “You rob us, carjack us, and shoot at us,” the e-mail reads. “But, when a white police officer shoots a black gang member … you call him a racist.” Gobbel intended to send the message to himself in a classic Michael Scott move. • source

Offbeat: The guy who said this about a saggy pants bill gets a gold star

  • This is the ‘crack’ bill, and I think any respectable citizen would be against crack.
  • Tennessee State Rep. Joe Towns • On creating a saggy pants bill to stop the spread of drawer-revealing loose jeans. Towns co-sponsored the bill and sounds like an awesome guy otherwise. • source

Sports: How notable is Pat Summit’s college coaching feat?

  • She’s better than everyone, even the guys. Summit, Tennessee’s longtime coach, is the first person – male or female – to hit 1,000 wins in coaching college basketball. The next closest is Bob Knight, who got to 900 wins in more time (and by throwing more chairs) than it took Summit. It’s a fact not lost on her. “Wow,” Summit said after winning. “This may be a little hard for me.” source
