Sports: Steve McNair will be ever-present for the Titans this season

  • His number, 9, will adorn the team’s helmets this year. The Tennessee Titans, still reeling from the loss of their most iconic player, will use their helmets to remember him (among other ways). The back-of-the-helmet decals will definitely help keep his memory alive for many. But it’s his loss – a shocking death in a murder-suicide – that’s still fresh in the minds of many. source

Sports: Bad kind of irony: Steve McNair was shooting an anti-suicide PSA

  • Obviously, never is a good time for that ad to air. The former Tennessee Titans quarterback, killed last weekend, was working with Tennessee health officials for the ad, but it hadn’t reached completion. The murder-suicide nature of the attack, now agreed upon by authorities, really doesn’t do that ad any favors. How unfortunate. source

Sports: As a black quarterback, Steve McNair was a pioneer in the NFL

  • He paved a path many QBs have gone down since. Vince Young? Donovan McNabb? Michael Vick? All three of them owe much to their success of Steve McNair, a black quarterback in an era where most of them were white. The 13-year NFL star, who retired last year, was an icon to many. Former Baltimore Ravens teammate Derrick Mason had this to say about his thrower last year: “When he came out in ’95, not many people were taking a chance on a lot of quarterbacks that played at small schools, much less a black quarterback back when there were so many stereotypes about African-American quarterbacks.” source
