U.S.: Coming soon: Obama Stimulus Plan II, Electric Boogaloo?

  • With unemployment still really high, it might just be necessary. The first stimulus plan convinced die-hard fiscal conservatives everywhere to make total tea bags of themselves. Would a possible round two have a similar effect? That’s what Obama administration officials get to have fun deciding over the next little while. If things continue to suck in the economy, we could in fact see another stimulus package sold to the American people. The question is, when, if at all, would it be safe for Obama to pull that fairly unpopular trigger? source

Politics, U.S.: See ya, GOP: Why Arlen Specter is now a Democrat

  • It has become clear to me that the stimulus vote caused a schism which makes our differences irreconcilable.
  • Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Spector • On why he’s switching parties. He claims that he always voted based on the issue, not the party line, but the Republicans aren’t happy with him in his state. His switching brings the Democrats closer to a two-thirds majority in the Senate. Less filibusters = more pushing stuff through. Liberals must be getting excited. • source

Biz, U.S.: *FOREHEAD SLAP* Good one Chris Dodd *FOREHEAD SLAP*

  • As many know, the administration was, among others, not happy with the language. They wanted some modifications to it. They came to us, our staff, and asked for changes, and the changes at the time did not seem that obnoxious or onerous.
  • Sen. Christopher Dodd • On adding a provision to the stimulus bill allowing AIG to give out massive bonuses to its employees. He was asked to make these changes by the Treasury, which seems to have a lot of power over legislation considering they’re not legislators. Dodd wants to tax the bonuses, BTW. • source

U.S.: COBRA insurance got more affordable, thanks to the stimulus

  • 65% of the cost will be covered by the government. If you get laid off between September 1, 2008 and December of this year, you’re eligible for a new program designed to make COBRA health insurance payments actually affordable. The program, designed to let people continue to have health insurance even while unemployed, has famously cost way too much. But for many with pre-existing conditions, it’s the only option. Big ups for the Obama administration. source

U.S.: Jindal’s volcano remark: An erupting dramabomb

  • $140 million? Necessary? Uh, yeah, dude. Last night, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal made a critical comment about an appropriation in the stimulus bill for “volcano monitoring” during his rebuttal to President Obama’s speech. But locals near major volcanoes say the money is necessary to prepare for natural disasters – something critics say Jindal should know about, given his state’s recent history with Hurricane Katrina. Plus, the money would create jobs, one expert notes. Jindal isn’t backing down, though. source
