Politics: Joe Lieberman’s polling: Here’s why he isn’t running, kids

  • 31% Lieberman’s approval rating in Connecticut as of right now – he’s a bit of a loose cannon these days
  • 66% of Connecticut residents want to throw the bum out in 2012; now they don’t have to! source
  • » Democrats lick their chops: After Lieberman deftly tiptoed into a 2006 victory over Ned Lamont and some Republican we don’t care about, Democrats felt a little wounded. Now they’ve got reason to be happy, as they actually stand a chance of winning the seat back. On the other side, word is that Linda McMahon plans to run again, giving us more opportunities to link to wrestling videos of her getting tombstoned.

Politics: How much for a cup of Joementum? Lieberman may need it

  • cause Sen. Joe Lieberman faces reelection in 2012 after spending his last term actively agitating the Democratic party; he went Independent after losing the 2006 primary, then won the race.
  • effect A likely repeat of 2006, with a hotly contested Connecticut Senate primary pitting Lieberman against the Democratic left-wing. Yeah, he may be in the primary despite the “I” currently near his name. source

U.S.: Sen. Kent Conrad will not seek reelection in 2012

  • After months of consideration, I have decided not to seek reelection in 2012.
  • Senator Kent Conrad • The moderate Democrat announced his pending retirement this morning. He’s been in the Senate since 1987, representing North Dakota, a fairly conservative state. With his announcement, the Democratic Party is likely feeling some angst that a new window of congressional opportunity may be opening for their Republican counterparts. Conrad scoffed at the notion he feared losing a potential reelection bid, insisting his age was his primary motivator (Conrad is 62). source

Politics: The Senate’s Tea Party Caucus: Is three really a caucus?

  • yeah… January 27th will mark the first meeting of the Senate Tea Party Caucus. Sen. Rand Paul, the founder of the group, will be joined by Sens. Mike Lee and Jim DeMint.
  • but…That’s only three people. Other Tea Partiers, like Marco Rubio, haven’t committed. If no one else joins, how much power can a three-man caucus really have? source
  • » Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story had a pretty bad error in it. Appropriate parties have been informed/chastized/made fun of. Our bad.

Politics: Tom Coburn has date for the State of the Union: Chuck Schumer

They’ll be paired, “Odd Couple”-style, in an attempt to be more civil. “We don’t sweep differences under the rug,” Chuck said. “Tom and I have real differences, but we can do it civilly.” source

Politics: Tea Partiers upset because they get upset about everything

  • Choice quote of the freaking day: “For them to legislate when they’ve collectively lost their mandate just shows the arrogance of the ruling elite. I can’t imagine being repudiated in the way they were and then coming back and saying ‘Now that we’ve been repudiated, let’s go pass some legislation.’ ” That’s a Tea Party dude, Mark Meckler of the Tea Party Patriots, ripping Democrats for taking advantage of their lame-duck session to get some actual work done. Then after ripping the Democrats, he ripped the GOP for letting it happen: “The Republicans, frankly, have been a disaster. They stood strong on some things, but the only reason they stood strong is because we stood behind them with a big stick.” Nobody cares, Mark. Stop whining. (thanks inothernews) source

Politics: Joe Miller: I don’t have Lisa Murkowski’s phone number

  • In his first interview after announcing his concession, in the very first question, Miller dropped the kind of land mine that ensures it’ll be hard for him to be elected dog catcher in Fairbanks. Seriously? You’re not going to call because you don’t have her number? Stop being a loser and call the woman already. E-mail her if you have to. Use Skype or FaceTime or something. Oh wait … see this page right here? There’s a list of all of her offices, with their phone numbers. It’s a holiday weekend, but we bet that if you called one of those offices on Monday morning, Joe, they might get you in touch with the Senator. Just a hunch.

Politics: Joe Miller: I didn’t lose election, but the system won’t let me win

  • The time has come to accept the practical realities of the current legal circumstances.
  • Joe Miller • Admitting what’s been clear for about two months – he lost. What’s annoying about the phrasing of this statement was not that it congratulated Lisa Murkowski for her win, but suggested that he was only giving up because he didn’t stand a chance of winning an appeal. As does this phrase: “I accept that criticism knowing often doing what is right is not what is easy or popular. We were not successful in that endeavor, but it was a worthwhile one.” Get over yourself, Joe. You lost. Be a man instead of a jerk and call Lisa. It’s unbelievable that you haven’t been willing to call her to congratulate her. source

U.S.: Joe Miller for some reason won’t quit Alaska Senate race (still!)

  • yeah … Miller has confirmed that he won’t contest the confirmation of Lisa Murkowski’s November election win, because she won.
  • … but Because he for some reason can’t give in easily, Miller will be filing a lawsuit in federal court. Dude, just give it up already. You lost. source
  • » But why? His explanation: “After careful consideration and seeking the counsel of people whose opinion I respect and trust, I have decided that the federal case must go forward,” Miller said. “The integrity of the election is vital and ultimately the rule of law must be our standard.” Dude. You need new friends. At this rate, you won’t get elected for dog catcher.
