U.S.: Students protest California’s frustrating university budget cuts

  • My heart and my support are with everybody and anybody who wants to stand up for public education. I salute those who are making themselves heard today in a peaceful manner on behalf of a great cause.
  • University of California President Mark Yudof • Regarding the major protests being staged at his and other universities across California and in 17 other states. The protests are in the wake of massive budget cuts to the state’s educational institutions, which have the effect of lowering the quality of education and raising the cost of tuition. For his part, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says the cuts are terrible, but necessary, due to the state’s $20 billion budget deficit. Rock, meet hard place. In between? An education system. source

U.S.: How big budget cuts screwed over the California university system

  • Dismantling this institution, which is a huge economic driver for the state, is a stupendously stupid thing to do, but that’s the path the Legislature has embarked on. When you pull resources from an institution like this, faculty leave, the best grad students don’t come, and the discoveries go down.
  • University of California-Berkeley dean of the College of Chemistry Richard A. Mathies • Describing how a $813 million budget cut has decimated the system, forced tuition hikes and created huge protests at universities throughout the University of California system. We’d straight-up say the budget cut was a terrible idea, but we just want to point out the level of gridlock getting ANY budget passed in California this year. The state’s jumbled constitution and laws have had the effect of screwing the state. Simple as that. • source

U.S.: California jerks around its teachers with preliminary pink slips

  • 26,500 teachers received pink slips before the Sunday deadline to receive them. California’s public education system needs to swallow $8 billion in budget cuts, but many of these pink slips will likely be rescinded. They must be having fun right now.
  • 15,000 school support staffers – bus drivers, janitors, secretaries and administrators – also received preliminary pink slips. A number of teachers and other staffers wore pink to school on Friday to protest the slips. source
