Obama Judicial nominee Goodwin Liu asks to withdraw his name

Goodwin Liu says goodbye: One of the many contentious battles between the Republican Party and the Obama administration may come to a close, as judicial nominee Goodwin Liu has asked the President to withdraw his name from consideration. Obama nominated Liu on February 24th, 2010, and he’s languished in the Senate approvals process ever since. His nomination was a hit with the President’s liberal base, as Liu is rather liberal himself (and a UC Berkeley professor, to boot), but that made the political strategy for the GOP all too obvious. With the strength of the Senate filibuster still in hand, they decided to wait it out, hoping that Senate gridlock would scuttle his nomination. It seems that they were right. source

Know who’s kind of a jerk? That’s right. Mitch McConnell. The Senate Minority Leader, who’s still the minority leader after Tuesday’s elections, isn’t looking to compromise with Obama on anything. He’s digging in his heels. “If our primary legislative goals,” he said during a speech at the Heritage Foundation Thursday, “are to repeal and replace the health spending bill, to end the bailouts, cut spending and shrink the size and scope of government, the only way to do all these things it is to put someone in the White House who won’t veto any of these things.” Your primary role is to end gridlock and get things done, and to find ways to reach your goals while working within the system. Not to keep the system stagnant for two whole years until you get what you want. In fact, we’d argue that part of the reason you didn’t do better on Tuesday is because of the gridlock. Obama would be smart to not bend to this guy. source

Dismantling this institution, which is a huge economic driver for the state, is a stupendously stupid thing to do, but that’s the path the Legislature has embarked on. When you pull resources from an institution like this, faculty leave, the best grad students don’t come, and the discoveries go down.

We’d straight-up say the budget cut was a terrible idea, but we just want to point out the level of gridlock getting ANY budget passed in California this year. The state’s jumbled constitution and laws have had the effect of screwing the state. Simple as that. • source

The defector Sen. Pedro Espada, who sided in the Republicans in a coup a month ago, finally agreed to side with the Democrats once again – but not without perks. Espada, who was one of two drama-creating Democrats to defect, is now the party’s majority leader in the Senate. Nice deal, bro.
The defectees While the Republicans didn’t get control of the State Senate like they tried to, they did push some reforms through in June which are staying put, as part of the agreement to stop the gridlock. All this stuff happened a day after Richard Ravitch was appointed lieutenant governor. source
