Politics: Applying for Hillary’s job? Sarah Palin’s heading to the Holy Land

  • While we’ve had a Sarah Palin moratorium on the site for the past two months, and we’re not looking to end it, we’d like to think Palin making a “diplomatic” run to Israel to speak to Benny Netanyahu is news. So we’re going to post it. Because, hey, this will probably be the only Palin-related topic we post about Sarah until she announces she’s running for president. source

Politics: Dead-on Sarah Palin impersonator causes scene at CPAC

  • Here at ShortFormBlog, we have instituted a standing no-Sarah-Palin policy until she actually announces she’s running for political office again. But that doesn’t mean we can’t post anything about Sarah Palin impostors hilariously storming CPAC. She’s not technically Sarah Palin. So, there you go guys … a Sarah Palin impostor hilariously storming CPAC. It’d be much funnier if it was a dude in drag, but we’ll take it. source

Politics: Max Headroom: How 24-hour news cycles numb grave tragedies

  • Look, it’s been a long week. It feels like a lot has happened since the events of last Saturday, and it might feel good to have a palate-cleanser here, but instead, here’s this Lawrence O’Donnell clip. This whole Arizona debate has been about tone – the whole thing. It’s never been about looking for blame, even if that’s what some saw in it. It was a valid argument then and it still is a week later. That’s why this clip makes us uncomfortable. We somehow got from tragedy to Sarah Palin to this story angle, where it feels like everything has come full-circle – the emotion isn’t there. It’s just the acerbic commentary that doesn’t help as much as it thinks it does. There’s a good debate here – about what Palin or other commentators on both sides should or shouldn’t have done. If anything, the circumstances lent themselves to these questions. Now it’s time to let the questions stand on their own, without the shadow of the tragedy. Let’s make them two separate things.
  • Chris Christie: Not arrogant enoughYou know, in the face of all the accolades that GOP darling Chris Christie, New Jersey’s governor, is getting for his approach to politics, what’s most refreshing is the way that he brushes them off like they’re not a big deal. Christie – again – says he’s not running for president. Why doesn’t anyone believe him?
  • A welcome Zodiac respiteAs ugly as this news week got, at least we had this story about the zodiac signs to use as a breather. Even as we had our own qualms with a certain angle of this story, we can say that it was the palate cleanser we needed. Rachel Maddow’s excited for the chance to focus on something else for a moment.

Politics: Sarah Palin incorrectly uses term “blood libel” to defend herself

  • Especially within hours of a tragedy unfolding, journalists and pundits should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence they purport to condemn. That is reprehensible.
  • Sarah Palin • Defending herself from criticism while using a pretty heavy term incorrectly. From Wikipedia: “Blood libel (also blood accusation) refers to a false accusation or claim that religious minorities, almost always Jews, murder children to use their blood in certain aspects of their religious rituals and holidays.” She may have a claim to being unfairly treated by some, but it certainly wasn’t “blood libel.” source

Politics: On Gabrielle Giffords, Sarah Palin, tonal problems, etc.

  • Probably the most interesting take we’ve seen on this whole incident comes from James Fallows. “It is legitimate,” Fallows writes, “to discuss whether there is a connection between that tone and actual outbursts of violence, whatever the motivations of this killer turn out to be.” The suspect – we don’t know what was going through his head, and who knows if we will. But a generally vitriolic political environment can have an unwieldy, uncontrollable result in the wrong hands. The reason why things like Sarah Palin’s “Take Back the 20” or her congressional opponent’s gun-shooting event worry us have nothing to do with Palin having a direct role in the shooting, but with the way that general anger and rage has played an influential role in our political climate. You have to be careful with this kind of imagery. A good comparison Fallows makes is the JFK assassination, where he offers a suggestion that Lee Harvey Oswald’s motives may have been influenced by the general anger and discontent in Dallas at the time of Kennedy’s visit. Arizona has a lot going on right now. It’s fair to draw comparisons, even if on the surface, they aren’t so clear. source

U.S.: Sarah Palin: “My sincere condolences” to Gabrielle Giffords’ family

  • My sincere condolences are offered to the family of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and the other victims of today’s tragic shooting in Arizona. On behalf of Todd and my family, we all pray for the victims and their families, and for peace and justice.
  • Sarah Palin • In a statement on her Facebook page about the Gabrielle Giffords shooting. No judgment, no criticism. It’s simple and fair. We’ll just leave this here. source

Politics, U.S.: Sarah Palin’s “Take Back the 20” site used gun imagery

  • All of a sudden, Sarah Palin’s “Take Back the 20” site is getting slammed. In case you can’t get into it, here’s the main image used. One of those three targets is Giffords, the first congressperson to be killed in the line of duty since Leo Ryan made an unfortunate trip to Jonestown in 1978. (EDIT: There are conflicting reports.) Suffice it to say that Palin has yet to tweet about thissource

Politics: Santorum puts an end to questions of Palin’s qualifications

  • What does it mean to be qualified to be president? She is born in this country and she’s the right age. Those are the qualifications.
  • Rick Santorum • When asked if Sarah Palin is qualified to be President. The former Senator brings up a valid point, and yeah, it’s silly for us to keep asking if she’s qualified. However, keep in mind his motivations: Santorum is widely seen to be considering a run for President himself in 2012. Were he and Palin to both enter the race, they’d be directly competing for the social conservative vote, so it makes sense that he’d start subtly deriding her now. source
