Politics: Obama’s new deficit-reduction group an ultra-partisan mess

  • I remain skeptical that the administration will take this effort seriously, especially after it all but ignored its previous debt commission and President Obama had to be dragged kicking and screaming to consider minimal spending cuts for the rest of this fiscal year.
  • House Minority Whip Eric Cantor • Offering a soft touch to the news of the president’s new deficit reduction group, which was supposed to include 16 members, eight from each party. Instead, it includes six — two Republicans and four Democrats. (The “gang of six,” by the way, was left out in the cold.) Cantor’s on the list, along with a bunch of other folks known for their partisanship. If you ask us, it sounds like he’s just pissed that he had to do something he didn’t really want to do. We know, Eric, we hate meetings too! source

Politics: So, why did Joseph Cao vote yes? The abortion amendment.

  • A rare politician that doesn’t care about partisanship. Kudos. Joseph Cao may face harsh criticism from the right on his vote, but he’s fully behind it. On his site, he writes: “I have always said that I would put aside partisan wrangling to do the business of the people.” The turning point for him? The amendment blocking federal funding of abortions with the health care bill. A loss for pro-choice advocates, but a huge win for health care supporters in general. source

Politics: Political polls based on scientific facts? Usually a bad idea.

  • 51% of Democrats think that America and Africa were once part of the same continent, a proven scientific fact that shouldn’t be the basis of a poll question
  • 24% of Republicans agree; only 35% of white people polled agreed with this poll, which smells of partisan baiting designed to conservatives look stupid source
