Politics: Obama’s state dinner plays like a lefty’s night out

  • Who’s invited? A ton of Obama staffers and anticipated Obama staffers will be there tonight. And a couple of big-name Hollywood types. And some who kind of span both celebrity and Obama staff, like Kal Penn. Oh, and Rahm Emanuel’s brother Ari, who was the inspiration behind Jeremy Piven’s “Entourage” character.
  • Who’s not invitedA lot of Republicans. Sen. Dick Lugar and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal are pretty much the most likely tighty righties holding down the fort among the 300 guests. Fox news is already playing it off as a major slight for some reason. What did you expect? You haven’t exactly done him any favors. source

Politics: Why doesn’t Obama use Twitter? Clumsy fingers.

  • Well, first of all, let me say that I have never used Twitter. My thumbs are too clumsy to type in things on the phone.
  • President Barack Obama • Discussing at a town hall with a bunch of Chinese students in Shanghai why he doesn’t use Twitter. He goes further into a larger dialogue on free speech, though, explaining that although information flows a little too freely for his taste sometimes (a lot of criticism comes with it), he really appreciates how it “makes our democracy stronger and it makes me a better leader because it forces me to hear opinions that I don’t want to hear.” Nice save, bro. • source

World: U.S. to Pakistan: Increase your efforts against the Taliban

  • The U.S. says Afghan troop increase useless without more Pakistan help. Question: If you’re trying to smoke out a group like the Taliban, do you focus on one country when they’re clearly seeping into another one? Of course not. Which is why the U.S. is trying to increase pressure on Pakistan, sending Gen. James L. Jones (along with a sternly-written letter) to make a case for an expanded effort. In fact, some officials advocating minimal troop increases suggest that it’s merely a matter of keeping the Taliban smoked out near Pakistan. We’ll see. source

U.S.: Unemployment sucks. Obama’s reacting. Time for a jobs summit!

  • Is that kind of like a job fair? Feeling the pressure of a 10.2% unemployment rate and facing criticism that his policies aren’t creating jobs, Obama is trying something new. A jobs summit. Just bring your resume to the White House this December, and Obama finds you a job, personally. (Make sure you’re wearing a nice suit – no suit, no job.) That’s how it works, right? source
