Politics: Ron Paul spokesman criticizes Romney on abortion

  • Given Governor Romney’s past flip-flops on the Right to Life issue and his support for Obamacare-like individual mandates, this stance is very troubling. Right to Life conservatives must question Gov. Romney’s commitment to our cause.
  • Jesse Benton, Ron Paul’s campaign manager • Voicing doubts about Mitt Romney’s commitment to the conservative anti-abortion movement. This line of attack on Romney from the right isn’t unusual, as the former Massachusetts governor was at one time avowedly pro-choice, but now says he’s changed his mind. This highlights an interesting contradiction between professed political ideology and reality, though — there’s a certain inescapable strangeness about a Ron Paul adviser, of all the possible campaigns, being the one to voice this charge. Making abortion illegal (and defunding institutions that provide) is, regardless of one’s feelings on the issue, an enormously “big government” solution. And if there’s one thing Ron Paul opposes in nearly every other circumstance, it’s big government. source

Politics: Early New Hampshire poll: Romney flying high, Bachmann rising fast

  • The field has a pretty obvious split: Those who like Mitt Romney and those who don’t. But there are some interesting details to note about New Hampshire Republican primary voters. First, Bachmann’s debate performance now has her polling above Sarah Palin, which is kind of a big deal. Second, Newt Gingrich is totally sucking. Third, despite many reasons to love him right now, Jon Huntsman has low polling numbers and low likability, which makes no sense. Finally, Rick Santorum is bringing up the rear — as he should. Either way, with the first big debate now in the rearview, the polling nonetheless is fascinating. source

  • Sarah Palin on “Fox News Sunday” • Suggesting that she sort of stole Romney’s thunder because her bus tour stopped in a town near to where Romney was announcing his candidacy — on a farm in New Hampshire. She’s also said that her much-publicized bus tour hasn’t moved her any closer to a decision on whether she’s running for president. Here’s a tip, Sarah — until you make up your mind, don’t screw over the people from your party. source

U.S.: Romney announces candidacy, promises healthcare repeal

  • Mitt Romney officially announced his candidacy for 2012 today, shooting for his second run at the White House. He promised to repeal “Obamacare” (which he fathered, right?) and to make more jobs for Americans. His focus is to take power from the federal level and give it to the states, like a true Republican, and he talked extensively about his political credentials. Politics: Chris Christie plays lone wolf in Mitt Romney health-care support

  • Gov. Romney’s speech yesterday was just the type of tone we need. While folks may not agree with what he said, that type of candor is what Americans expect from a serious presidential candidate today.
  • New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie • Offering a big wet kiss to Mitt Romney for his straight-talking approach to health care. Romney made the argument that the health care approach (which Obama based his national health-care plan upon) was the right one for his state — but not necessarily for the country. What’s weird is that Christie was one of the few to offer support to Mitt after the speech, which many on the right really didn’t like. Guess we know who Chris Christie is voting for in 2012. (Hint: Not himself.) source

Politics: Mitt Romney believed in that individual mandate back in 2007

  • I’d think it’s a terrific idea. I think you’re going to find when it’s all said and done, after all these states that are the laboratories of democracy, get their chance to try their own plans, but those who follow the path that we pursued will find it’s the best path, and we’ll end up with a nation that’s taken a mandate approach.
  • Mitt Romney • Expressing his experience-based belief that health care (and insurance) reform would be helped by an individual mandate, on a 2007 episode of Meet The Press. In other words, one of the quotes Romney is hoping beyond feverish hope not too many Republicans read heading into 2012. The thing is, this does conform with what he’s been insisting, that he supports what he did on health care because it was at the state level (the laboratories of democracy), not the federal level. However, he clearly says here that the mandate would, in fact, be the best plan nationwide. This is a problem — the GOP’s talking points haven’t just been saying that the mandate is bad because it’s federal, they’ve also been saying it’s wrong for the government to force you to buy something. Whether it’s Barack’s federal government, or Mitt’s Massachusetts, that argument ought to stay the same, right? source

Politics: 2012 election poll: Nobody’s really doing it for GOP voters yet

  • It really sucks to be a GOP voter right now. Despite wide frustration on the right side of the aisle over Barack Obama’s policies, nobody appears to be doing the trick for conservative voters, according to this poll by The Washington Post and ABC News. And it gets worse: In a general election, Obama would best the entire field. Only Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee really get within fighting distance. Tim Pawlenty and Newt Gingrich are 15 points behind. Sarah Palin is 17 points behind, by far the worst showing. source

Politics: Romney needs to bolster his South Carolina cred

  • You’ve got to be able to walk into a gas station, a restaurant, or a bar and be able to shake hands and communicate. It’s street level politics, if you will. He’s just very polished. He’s an individual that’s successful, but at the same time, I don’t know how much he wants to sit around and hang out.
  • South Carolina State Rep. Nathan Ballentine • Speaking about Mitt Romney’s electoral prospects in the Palmetto State, a matter now looking more imminent with Romney’s newly formed presidential exploratory committee. Romney got trounced in South Carolina last time around, finishing in fourth behind John McCain, Mike Huckabee, and “lazy like a fox” Fred Thompson. If his campaign chooses to cede South Carolina, and invests their resources elsewhere, they may be playing with fire; no Republican has lost the South Carolina primary and won the nomination since the first one, back n 1980. source
