U.S.: The G20 in Pittsburgh: It’s all fun and games until there’s tear gas

  • It’s a short video, but it does a good job of capturing the vibe of the anti-capitalism protests outside the G20 summit. About a dozen people were arrested and a bunch of windows were smashed in.source

World: China’s way of dealing with ethnic violence? Death penalty threats.

  • When it comes to the death penalty, BTW, China doesn’t mess around. In looking for the best way to deal with the ethnic violence that’s broken out this week between the lower-class Uighur people and higher-class Han people, Urumqi’s Communist Party boss, Li Zhi, has threatened the death penalty for those responsible for the riots in the Xinjiang capital. If you give even a minor to-do about human rights, this should anger you greatly, because of China’s history in this regard. source

World: An ode to Tiananmen Square’s “tank man,” 20 years later

  • Here’s your iconic moment. This is the reason that the world still cares about human rights in China. This is the guy who did it. Maybe he’s still alive, maybe he’s not. But because of him, China has to block Twitter and Facebook from its people to make sure that people don’t repeat this incident. It isn’t right. This guy is a hero for democracy.source

Tech, World: Just in time for Tiananmen’s 20th anniversary, China blocks stuff

  • Most noticeably, anyone who lives in China and uses Twitter can’t use it right now, as access to the site has been blocked. So is Flickr and Hotmail. Basically, China is closed to Web 2.0. source
  • On top of that, China is blocking foreign news reports about the pro-democracy massacre, which they’ve been very careful to block from the public. They want to stop activists. source

Culture, World: M.I.A. calls out clothing companies with Sri Lankan ties

  • Since the end of the war in Sri Lanka (and heck, even during it), M.I.A. has been outspoken against human rights abuses happening there – and has strongly supported the Tamil rebels who lost. source
  • The pop star took to her Twitter feed to inform her 30,000+ readers of clothing companies who produce clothes in Sri Lanka – and many of them are brands you wear, like Nike and Ralph Lauren. source

U.S., World: Roxana Saberi, the jailed U.S. journo in Iran, is on a hunger strike

  • She will keep it up until she’s freed, her dad says. Saberi, a freelance journalist convicted of espionage, told her rather Reza Saberi in a short phone call that she had been on a hunger strike since Tuesday and would keep it up until she was released. Saberi says the call was short and that “she did not give us the chance to tell her not to do it.” Saberi’s arrest and conviction has met with worldwide criticism of Iran. source

Culture, Offbeat: BSG has officially jumped the shark. It did so at the U.N.

The cast of “Battlestar Galactica” came to the U.N. to talk about human rights, and, uh, Cylons. source
