Politics: Ironically, Linda McMahon having a hard time winning over the ladies

  • How can you claim to be a
political figure when you are on
    stage wrestling with your own
    daughter?
  • Connecticut resident Stacey Smith • Pinpointing the problem Linda McMahon has with wooing female voters. Part of it is that she’s one of the driving forces behind the WWE, an organization which not only doesn’t cater to women but portrays them cartoonishly. She’s also getting guff because she’s spent so much time and money on negative advertising. The end result? Richard Blumenthal is leading her 2:1 among females, the effect of which has put him well ahead in the race to replace Chris Dodd in the Senate. source

Politics: George Soros: I only started big donations because of Bush

  • I made an exception getting involved in 2004. And since I didn’t succeed in 2004, I remained engaged in 2006 and 2008. But I’m basically not a party man. I’d just been forced into that situation by what I considered the excesses of the Bush administration.
  • Democratic party super-donor George Soros • Explaining why he got so involved in those elections – and why he’s sitting this one out. This time, he’s choosing to push groups that support his causes – health care and the environment – and letting the election fall where it may. Isn’t he concerned the GOP might win both Houses? He is, he says, “but I’m not in a position to stop it. I don’t believe in standing in the way of an avalanche.” Well, that’s promising for November, lefties. It’s OK – we can just complain about the Koch Brotherssource

Politics: Christine O’Donnell’s second campaign ad: Just like the first

  • Yeah yeah, she didn’t go to Yale, she isn’t perfect, but this seems a lot more calculated the second time around. If you’re going to take this approach, you should change it up slightly so that people don’t tire of the message. We liked the conceit of it better the first time. Now it feels like formula. By the way, she’s down in the polls by nearly 20 points. source

Politics: Kentucky Senate race: Paul vs. Conway = national vs. regional

  • I’m not saying Dr. Paul is crazy. I think some of his ideas are outside the mainstream … He doesn’t understand Kentucky.
  • Democratic Kentucky Senate candidate Jack Conway • Sizing up opponent Rand Paul in a debate aired on “Fox News Sunday” this morning. While Conway was emphasizing Kentucky in the debate, Paul was trying to make it a broader debate on the Obama administration’s success and failure rate. “This is really about the president’s agenda,” he said. “Do you support it or oppose it?” Perhaps Paul should start focusing on those local issues – he lost a huge lead and is only up on Conway by a couple of points right now. source

Politics, U.S.: The GOP: Party of fiscal responsibility

  • If Democrats were smart, they’d plaster this graph on billboards in swing districts around the country. This calculation is based on an analysis by the Center for American Progress, which used estimates by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office as their starting point (methodology here). Economics whiz Ezra Klein adds, “the treatment of the GOP’s vague spending cuts is extremely generous.” Any Tea Partiers care to comment? source

Politics: Carl Paladino likes to get into shouting matches with NY Post editors

  • Carl Paladino is like the most entertaining shot in the arm for New York politics in a long time. Not that it wasn’t boring before – have you seen David Paterson? – but you just get the feeling that if this dude actually becomes the state’s governor, he’s going to have an encounter like this every single week. This video also looks like it could’ve been shot anytime in the last 30 years. Fred Decker, the NY Post’s state editor, is just a warm-up act. source

Politics: Obama on GOP Pledge: Whatever, stupid jerks

  • That’s not a prescription for a better future. It’s an echo of a disastrous decade we can’t afford to relive.
  • President Barack Obama • Discussing the GOP’s new “Pledge to America,” which promises to repeal many of the things Obama has done. He’s ticked that the GOP, for example, wants to roll back health care. In regards to the recession in general, Obama had this to say: “We have to keep pushing to promote growth that will generate the jobs we need, and repair the terrible damage the recession has done.” source

Politics: Even conservatives don’t like the GOP’s latest manifesto

  • I want to endorse it, but it’s so milquetoast that it proves to me that these guys just aren’t ready to lead.
  • Andrew Roth, of the leading conservative group Club For Growth  • On the “Pledge to America,” the GOP’s plan for governance in the event that they win the House and/or Senate.  source
