World: A modest proposal: Give ShortFormBlog Ireland’s bailout money

  • Hey, if Ireland doesn’t want any of this bailout money, give it to us. For days now, the European Union – and now Britain proper – have been pushing to give Ireland lots of money to ensure its solvency. However, Ireland doesn’t seem to have any interest in taking it, at least right now. So, we’d like to offer a proposal to the European Union. Give us the bailout money. We’d use the money to build our own country (tentatively titled ShortLandia) where we’d build an army of coffee shops and have dozens of bloggers working away, producing short content for the masses of other countries throughout the world. It’d be communism. Except in content farm form. And instead of eating soviet bread, we’d be drinking ShortLandia lattes. With an extra kick. So you don’t fall asleep and prevent another piece of content from hitting the Intersphere. source

World: The final tally: Iceland’s volcanoes and the resulting financial cost

  • 10
    million
    number of people who
couldn’t fly for six days as a result of the clouds of volcanic ash
  • $3.3
    billion
    the amount this will cost
    the airline companies, according
    to estimates source
  • » Who foots the bill?: It’s inevitable that refunds (or worse, lawsuits) will come out of this whole situation, and EU Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas says that the airlines should foot the bill and keep in mind the rights of consumers, but maybe with the help of European governments to soften the massive blow. Thanks again for nothing, Iceland!

World: The E.U. hoppin’ mad about fake passports used in Hamas killing

  • They plan to issue a sternly-written letter shortly. Mahmoud al-Mabhouh’s assassination in Dubai last month has increasingly gotten more intriguing as the story has unfolded, and the use of fake IDs by the reported assassins, besides being a plot point for a Jason Bourne movie, has only boosted attention on the case. While their statement won’t expressly cite Israel for what happened, we’re guessing the EU wants to infer it. source

Tech: On the flip side, Microsoft and the EU no longer locking horns

  • Now if only Intel could get some of MS’s juju. The European Union has been on the company’s back over lack of browser choice, something Microsoft has responded to by actually listening to them and offering choices other than Internet Explorer to its users. The EU’s response? They’re dropping the suit, and MS gets to roam (somewhat) free. Happy time! source

World: So much for avoiding a diplomatic crisis with the UK, Iran

  • They’re going to try those British embassy staffers. WTF? Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati (who, for a frame of reference, is this guy) announced the news today during prayer services. “And then some people in the UK embassy,” he said, “who had a hand in the disturbances, were arrested and will surely be put on trial.” The UK is pissed; the European Union plans to show solidarity in getting Iran to let go of those diplomats. And everyone else in the world is trying to tell Iran that they can’t shift the blame this time. source
