U.S.: Washington Post political reporter David S. Broder has died

  • David S. Broder, dead at 81: The legendary Washington Post political reporter passed away today. A veteran of cataclysmic American news stories, not least of all the Watergate scandal, Broder was a deeply respected and revered figure in print news, and had last contributed a column to the Post on February 6th. I think most everybody understands the dream of loving your work so much that you want to just keep doing it, even into your 80s. That Broder knew this joy, and showed this industriousness, is a credit both to himself and the people who surrounded him. source

World: A video glimpse into the chaos, brutality in Tripoli

  • Not for the faint of heart: This Al Jazeera English clip gives a stark and worthy overview of the bloodshed in Libya, including some particularly grisly shots taken from the streets of Tripoli. Be advised that it’s rather unpleasant to watch, but nonetheless – there’s a truth to the grim images that needs to be presented in times like these. It’s important for the ability of Libyans to make themselves and their horrific struggle known, and to inform our international conscience. source

U.S.: John Wheeler’s harrowing last video: What happened next?

  • What happened to John Wheeler in the thirteen hours between the shooting of this security tape and his discovery at a landfill? Because what happened in this clip is harrowing. “He had dirt on his right leg,” said Cathleen Boyer, a security guard who witnessed Wheeler hobbling through a garage around the time this clip was taken. “His eyes were red, like he was crying or something.” Wheeler was offered help. He didn’t take it. He needed it. source

World: U.K. Segway owner falls off a cliff; don’t make fun of him, jerks

  • Let’s face it. A lot of heartless bastards are gonna find this story funny. But let us not forget that there was a real person involved, and that real person had a very tragic accident yesterday. Jimi Heselden, the 62-year-old owner of the of Segway (he bought the company in December), was found dead after his scooter fell off a cliff. Yes, there’s irony here. Yes, you’ll probably hear an off-color joke or three about this incident. But it still doesn’t negate the fact that it’s an awful accident that we wouldn’t wish upon everyone. Poor guy. source

Politics: Guy dies, wants you to donate to Obama’s 2012 opponent

  • There really isn’t much more to add to this. But let’s just say that Mr. Donald Charles Unsworth really was passionate about fighting against that Obama jerk. Perhaps too passionate. To friends and neighbors of this Rome, Georgia, resident, don’t send flowers. Drop a money bomb. source
