Offbeat: We’re thankful for the opportunity to buy the Pabst company

Screen-shot-2009-11-26-at-3.02.30-PM

  • Pabst Blue Ribbon‘s maker is on the market. Their asking price is $300 million. We’re thankful for PBR. Anyone want to help crowdsource ownership of the cheapest, crappiest/best beer ever? Just think – $5 could help make the dream of many hipsters come true. And us. We want to own the company and make rivers of Schlitz. source

Tech: Comparing apples to apples: Woolworths vs. … um, Apple

A row of apples
  • Woolworths apple Looks like a worm has already gotten to it, based on its loopy shape. It’s got a firm kind of plastic, which tells you that the apple is genetically modified. Is the subject of a scary lawsuit from the Apple on the right. source

  • Bad apple Brown, a little shady on the inside. Makes you want to not eat it. We wanted to get a nice apple, but we were in a hurry this morning so we grabbed the very first apple off the tree we could find. Good enough for our purposes. source

  • Apple logo Not very organic. Made of chrome. Probably tough to bite into. Probably a few transistors in there somewhere. Was sued heavily by a much more musical Apple back in the day, and is now paying it forward. Good job. source

Biz: Ex-Lehman Bros. CEO Dick Fuld tired of getting “dumped on”

  • You know what? The anniversary’s coming up. I’ve been pummeled, I’ve been dumped on, and it’s all going to happen again. I can handle it. You know what, let them line up.
  • Former Lehman Bros. CEO Dick Fuld • Describing the torrent of criticism he’s gotten since the company completely collapsed last year. Fuld has been a bit press-shy since the collapse for understandable reasons. “Nobody wants to hear it,” he says. “The facts are out there. Nobody wants to hear it, especially not from me.” The full article is quite good. If you choose one link to click on tonight, choose this one. -> • source

Tech: Harmonix: Lots of failures before major “Rock Band” success

  • I was watching people interact with our product, and the realization came crashing down on me – we had spent 18 months on a music system that was fundamentally flawed.
  • Harmonix co-founder Alex Rigopulos • On a karaoke system that Harmonix developed that turned out to be a big failure. It was one of many miscues for the company before hitting on a formula that would bring them lasting success – music games with peripherals. With the help of Red Octane, they created the early “Guitar Hero” games, then took it in a whole new direction with “Rock Band.” Regarding a fairly unpopular poll question we asked the other day, whether the company had sold out, Rigoulos says “we didn’t feel that way at all. We felt that our time had finally come to compete in the big leagues.” A great interview that deserves to be read in full. • source
